Another Spurs playoff run, another run on Gregg Popovich's coaching staff. After losing lead assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo to the Seattle SuperSonics after they won the 2007 NBA title, the Spurs may be in danger of losing assistant coach Mike Budenholzer to the Phoenix Suns. Budenholzer, who was elevated to the lead assistant's spot on Popovich's staff after Carlesimo's departure, has surfaced in Phoenix as a possible replacement for Mike D'Antoni.

What's with this fixation with the Spurs coaching staff, look at Carlesimo in seattle, disaster right? they can win 1000 rings but can they defend their title at least for once? the only talent that Pop has is he knows how to select good players

It really don't matter if other teams has yet to win a championship, the point to prove here by the spurs is to win back to back titles, no offense no die hard spurs fan

"What's with this fixation with the Spurs coaching staff"
- j-rufino

Rufino - Other than Phil Jackson's staff with the Lakers, the Spurs coaching staff is the most brilliant group in the league. They know the discipline needed to win a championship, and they are very good at both offensive and defensive tactics. When the game is on the line, and crucial decisions need to be made, you want someone of that caliber making the call.
Anyone who has coached alongside Popovich and has learned from him is definitely someone to contend with.

Go Coach Bud!!! We'll miss you, but it's time he got some attention!

OK everyone here goes. Ouch! I'm not ready to say the Hornets will take this second round, but damn they are good in the third quarter. I don't see the Spurs folding, so this one will probably go 7. Ouch.

You said a mouth full
The Champs had it until they hit the third quarter and West decided to go Wilt Chamberlin on us. Whew hard to see. Oh by the way can someone please Wake Up Duncan, does he get caught up in the NO atmosphere everytime he goes to Louisiana.

last night was extremely frustrating. i dont really understand how things got so out of hand except for the officiating was awful the whole game, it just screwed SA in the 3rd quarter. i was embarassed for the officials. duncan just needs some confidence right now. he isnt even hardly taking shots in the post. he is spending too much time out setting high screens for parker. get him in the paint and let him work his legendary bank shot.

on topic i think that PJ deserves a shot as a head coach again. he has done a great job and i would totally miss him but i think its time for him to live in the limelight.

GO SPURS GO!

The Spurs can't play in the second half with the Hornets in NO. That was depressing. I wish I could say I was even slightly optimistic of their chances.

You are gonna need some more raid for your Hornets problem Texasmade..

The Tour is still struggling with its bug probem, but it should be up and running in no time.

I think there is some fire extinguisher residue left on that court! Hey at least everyone else (Hornets included) looks mortal. I can't see any team who has the inside track on a ring this year. All I can say is Go Spurs! Come on home for some good ole home cooking. We'll see if the Hornets feel the same way in a real game 7!

May 14, 2008  12:14 PM ET

Why the run on the Spurs coaching staff? How about the fact that Pop is one of the most underrated coaches out there and those that either played under him or were on his coaching staff have seen first hand what it makes to make a winning franchise?

PJ Carlesimo is the exception, not the rule. But everyone, including PJ, knew it was going to be rough going in Seattle b/c they're trying to gut their team and move. Let's look at all those who started off in the Spurs camps and where they are:

Sam Presti, GM in Seattle
Steve Kerr, GM in Phoenix
Avery Johnson, unemployed former Dallas coach, but still a heck of a coach
"Doc" Rivers, head coach, Boston Celtics
Mike Brown, head coach, Cleveland Cavs
Danny Ferry, Cleveland Cavs GM

This list isn't counting people like Monty Williams, etc, that are assistants around the league. Last year the Cavs even had the moxie to make the Finals. Spurs vs. Spurs East.

The Spurs are (and have been for a while) the model team. Everyone wants a piece of them and to soem extent it has worked. It's like that with any great coach. They want attract good assistants and everyone want them. How many current coachs have worked with Larry Brown?

I wouldn't call PJ's situation a disaster yet. That's a young team with talent. They need some time and they'll be a good team. I don't understand this fixation with instant success without hard work. The Spurs took time to develop a team, The Bulls and Lakers did also. One season does not a disaster make!

Pop is only good at selecting players? Seriously you cannot believe that is true. He is one of the best coaches in the NBA. Sure he got Duncan, but who else has he "picked" who has had instant success? Parker (second round pick who needed development) Manu (Same thing). He coaches, he doesn't just pick and half the time it is R.C.'s find not Pop's. Pop is a master at a 7 game series and he's why I can say the Spurs are not folding in this one.

I also don't understand this "no back to back means no dynasty..." mentality. OK but I'm sure you all would say "no three in a row no dynasty" if they won a back to back, so I'll take the 4 in 10 and say it sure has been a great run! Tell me if your team won as many you wouldn't feel like they were a dynasty.

Hey here's something to look forward to, the Sprus are set up to reload next year with the three headed monster in tact. Win or lose this year, they will be there again and again and again. So I've got to say It sure is great to be a Spurs fan! "The train keeps a rollin'" I guess I should say "big wheel keeps on turnin'" since we are slugging it out with N.O.

Go Spurs Go!

RJ - Don't confuse Texasmade with a bandwagon LA fan. He's here win or lose. If TD goes cold, He's here. I cannot say the same about LA fans and Kobe. Good luck tonight.

It's hard to tell with you guys. Reason being that your team's success has been rather recent. On the other hand, the LAKERS have a tradition of being a winning organization.
