MLS nixes Reading bid for Altidore
Posted: Wednesday May 14, 2008 05:33AM ET
An Insider contact with strong European ties tells me that one German club recently inquired with MLS about Jozy Altidore's transfer availability. The response: Give us $7 million. That club passed, but would others in Europe be willing to fork over serious cash for a young American? Now I am hearing that MLS turned down $8 million from Reading in January and is looking for something in the neighborhood of $10 million. The Reading-Altidore connection is not new, but the dollar figures are.

I'd get that bid in sterling and hang on to it.

Report Offensive CommentThis article doesn't make any sense. I hate when the summary begins talking in the first person. The first reporting contradicts the second....
Ah now I see the news came from two different posts that FanNation smashed together. I hope MLS doesn't overly hype Altidore, his greatness is not set in stone yet. I am hoping that the $10 million is a fixed number that seeks to establish a record transfer fee for a Yank (one that actually plays on his national team), and not a sign that MLS will jack the price on anybody once they show interest.

Report Offensive CommentDynamic you are right -- This article bro is a mess it's all over the place and it makes no no no sense!
$10 million is a fair price and a good bar to start from BUT MLS can not let its young guns go to crappy European teams either....

Report Offensive CommentI fear that Jozy would not see enough playing time if he goes to the type of club willing to take a $10 million chance on him. He still has alot to work on, thing is he might not take that next step in his development until he leaves MLS.

Report Offensive CommentWhich German team?
Thank goodness he didn't go to Reading. Hard to say how much he would have played right away, and then he'd be going down with them.
If I were the MLS, I'd take LESS money to make sure he goes to the "right" club for Jozy rather than to some huge club where he'll ride the pine. But then we get into the next topic: greed. MLS doesn't give a rats behind about which club he goes to--just that they make big fat cash. I seriously doubt anyone at MLS is thinking about the "right" thing for Jozy, but more about the right dollar figure in their wallets... I think MLS needs to be compensated--but they should also be responsible with their young players.

Report Offensive Comment10mil really isn't that much considering how weak the US dollar is these days. I think it is around 6.5mil pounds for an English team or a little more than 5mil Euros for a European club.
The cutting and pasting of this T&R is tragic, but that is nothing new. You can't get the text and picture right all the time.

Report Offensive CommentD-Wreck - I don't really think it's greed with MLS. It's not the league's responsibility to look after player development in this way nor is it the league's responsibility to prepare players for the national team. They shouldn't give a rat's a$s about what club he goes to - only that they be compensated handsomely for his transfer. It's up to clubs to develop talent, not the suits in the league front office. Jozy and his family have to figure out what's right for Jozy and the league can't do that for them. I think the league should only be concerned with it's own survival and right now to MLS $10 Mil probably looks like filet mignon to a starving man. The starving man doesn't ask where the filet came from. Right?

Report Offensive CommentDJB- Itd be the opposite with the GBP being much stronger than the Euro... Just FYI. But yeah 5 mil GBP and 6.5 mil Euros doesnt sound like too too much for the hottest prospect of a natl team whos getting more recognition.
I think that if a powerhouse buys him and loans him out to the "right" team, that would be good too. But too much expectation is going to get to him...

Report Offensive CommentWhoa when did the Reading offer happen? I heard rumors that Altidore was being courted by giants like Manchester United, Madrid and Tottenham.
He is so YOUNG. A smart move would be to have one more productive season with the Bulls, sign for a huge European club and be put on loan to the Dutch or Portuguese leagues for a couple years to hone his game and get used to a more tactical brand of European football.
Look at Freddy Adu. I think he will really benefit from playing for Benfica for a few years. If he can show some class and play well in the UEFA cup this coming season, I expect some big clubs to take notice. Altidore has twice the athletic ability and class, so he should take his time and jump on the biggest offer he can.
pantherfan0728 | 05/14/08, 09:36 AM
Report Offensive CommentTottenham isnt a giant, just needed to put that in their. He does not need to go to a big club period. He needs to go to a middle of the table type team, get settled in, prove himself then move. Loans dont work because as soon as he gets hot somewhere he'll be pulled back and wont have time to get settled. Dont underestimate the power of being able to know your staying at club for a couple of years ago.
