Brian Urlacher says he will not attend organized team activities starting Monday and is leaning toward skipping the Bears' mandatory mini-camp May 30-June 1, but he insists talk of protesting his contract situation through training camp is premature.

Is he skipping rocks on Lake Michigan while avoiding camp?

May 14, 2008  06:38 AM ET

He will have a hard time earning the money coming his way on his current contract. The Bears would be crazy to extend it and pay him more. Not sure you could even trade him with the contract he has now..

I really dont like it when players hack away at their clubs both mentally (will cause a lower team morale) and physically (more money). They signed the damned contract, so play for your team until they have a chance to negotiate. These players show such greed.

Having said that, I do enjoy seeing the Bears crumble.

Shut up and play Urlacher. You've only got 1 or 2 more years left anyway. Cut his ass if he won't shut up. Good luck finding a similar deal with another team.

May 14, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Contracts mean nothing now.. they sign but a year later want more if they perform.. sad. Play and honor what you signed or sit at home and get nothing...

May 14, 2008  07:59 AM ET

wah another nfl player that isnt paid enough. a legend in his own mind.

May 14, 2008  08:07 AM ET

Age and injury concerns combined with sour attitude does not equal new contract.

Urlacher was one of the most productive linebackers in the league last year and deserves a raise. The Bears defense has been on the field an incredible amount of time over the last few seasons, which has taken a toll on Urlacher's body. He was the only linebakcer in the league last year with 5 sacks and 5 picks. That's a player on the decline? The salary cap was at $75 mil when Urlacher signed his contract, its now at $116 mil. He's given his heart and soul to Chicago. Pay the man!

I'm not just being a homer here. Urlacher is better than his current paychecks are. And he is stubborn too, if he says he will hold out, then I believe he will. Last year Briggs threw out a bunch of crap about how he will never play in Chicago, but then didn't back it up. Urlacher is the type that will do exactly what he says he will do. Thats probably why he is respected so highly in the locker room. I'm not saying this is all right and OK, but the truth is that a lot of guys make a lot more money than Urlacher and are not nearly the caliber of player he is. All the talk about him not being good anymore is inaccurate, last year the entire Bears defense was banged up, it just showed that he is not superman, but he is still one of the top three linebackers in the NFL, if not top three defensive players. he should be paid that way.

Now the talk about signing the long term deal...... Listen signing that kind of a deal, was more than just security for Urlacher, it was a statement that he wanted to be a Chicago Bear for his entire career, he should not be punished for that.

time to trade urlacher before we cant get anything for him

May 14, 2008  08:48 AM ET

AS A BEARS FAN FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS I AM TORN.....BUT THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE SO THEY SAY.........SOOOOOOO....... URLACHER SHUT UP AND PLAY.....DUDE YOUR 30 WITH A BAD NECK AND BAD BACK.......AND ......WE PLAY COVER 2.......IF WE PLAYED IN A 2 GAP, 350LB DT SCHEME.......ID BE BEGGING TO RESIGN YA......WHEN IN DOUBT BEAR FANS BLAME LOVIE!!!!

May 14, 2008  09:01 AM ET

well they paid a kicker 15 million the logic goes why not pay your line backer more like 54 million......ohh wait they did that. guess it is just a case of good old fashioned greed. guess we know brian is all about brian. I have 54 million reasons not to pity him.

May 14, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Hey, at least he's not launched a smear campaign yet, a la #85.

May 14, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Urlacher, you need to just shut your trap and get into camp. Your play the past couple years has dropped off and you don't deserve a contract extension and extra money. What have you done for Chicago lately? Except bring bad publicity to the City for all your off the field antics. What you need more money to pay for all your children you may have around?

May 14, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Kids cost money, and lawsuits cost more......He needs a break because of all his bad decisions.

May 14, 2008  09:57 AM ET

Sauce,

people like you make me sick...when it was lance briggs wanting more money ( which the bears paid) all of you urlacher cheerleaders called him every name in the book...now that its your good ole boy..you say its ok...come on...this dude hasnt been productive in two yrs...he was completely overpowered in the SB and he has a attitude problem...he's old and his body cant even do what it used to do well( run sideline to sideline) ...I told you that briggs was more valuable to the bears than urlacher...its that simple...to all of you who kept it real...continue

May 14, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Sauce ..Hard to justify paying the guy mega bucks in 2012 for work he did in 2007. No one believes for one second that he will be that effective 4/5 years from now. He was on a losing team, that also plays in to it.. His image is bigger than his game..The phone will not be ringing off the hook from other teams to trade for this guy. He is over valued now..

May 14, 2008  10:59 AM ET

For all you fans sticking up for Urlacher. Suppose the Bears decide to sign him, let's say $60 million over the next 5 years. What happens when he only plays 6 games because of injury next season. Can the Bears decide to not honor the contract and refuse to pay him??

You signed the contract idiot!! You should have held out for a better deal then, or pushed to be traded to the highest bidder.

Is it the money ... or his back? Either way, his stock in on the decline. The boy wants to cash in before it's too late!
