If his throwing sessions off the mound planned for this weekend in Atlanta go well, John Smoltz expects to begin a minor-league rehab assignment early next week and could rejoin the Braves -- as a reliever -- within 10 days. The veteran pitcher, on the disabled list recovering from rotator-cuff and biceps tendon inflammation in his right shoulder, made about 40 throws from 90 feet on flat ground Wednesday and said he felt "very good."

If they can get Smoltzee, Soriano & Gonzales back, they will turn around this shaky bullpen and become one of the strongest in baseball. Add Mike Hampton back to the rotation and the braves are back in it!

At two-and-a-half games out of first, they're "in it" right now.

Mike Hampton? Doesn't he have an ingrown toe nail or something?

No, I think it was an inflamed nose hair

HEY, get off Hampton's back will ya? He accidentally rubbed elbows with Juan Gonzales three years ago and got infected.

John is a leader and if healthy; can help us right away.

Hampton is such a bum.

If you're counting on 4 pitchers coming back from injury and all making an impact, you better start planning for a long offseason. Hampton?? You might've gotten away with the rah-rah chant until you threw him in the mix. Tomorrow he'll go on the 60 day DL with a strained toe beard.

Field Marshall Sunny Day | 05/15/08, 09:18 AM

I'm sure you meant a strained camel - toe for Hampton ..... but hey, it's great to fantasize about actually having a bullpen that might actually not implode every night....

Guys, guys, guys...
The Braves are "in it" right now...
The Braves, Mets and Phils are "in it" right now...with the marlins surprisingly leading the whole thing...
For the braves, who have the best ERA in the NL and 4th in the whole league, having smoltz back is great news...in the starting rotation or in the bullpen
if he comes out of the bullpen right away it improves our chances of winning 1 run games...which we have sucked for now...
If he comes starting...he is great for 5-7 innings - and u all know it -
hurting or not hurting the guy is a great pitcher...and gives u full 5 - 7 innings with 3 ERA or less plus 5-10 K's a game...

The braves chances of coming on top at the end are improved if smoltz gets back, soriano gets back, and mike gonzalez gets back...
all of them will get back, its just a matter of time and wait - to have all back together helping team....THEY ALL ARE COMING BACK in less than a month.

When Smoltz comes back, the bullpen will benefit. If any of the other guys come back, it's gravy.

May 15, 2008  10:19 PM ET

That John Smoltz, he always crack me up.

May 15, 2008  10:48 PM ET

I was about to make a comment about expecting Hampton back....but........A strained toe beard...lol.....Can't top that one.....I bow to the master! ....

I know it is stating the obvious, but the Braves need Smoltz....he is going to help them contend if he stays healthy after his return
