Carlisle promises tough Mavs camp

The Mavericks want a looser hand on the sideline, a coach who will let them run and do what they do best. That's fine, Rick Carlisle said Wednesday. But they better be ready to pay the price. At his introductory news conference, the Mavericks' new coach said his team is in for a meat-grinding training camp full of sprints and sweat when they convene in October. While making it clear that some of the players who finished the season won't be here then, the ones who are will get a punishing month of workouts.

This promise should have positive results or Cuban the Great won't hesitate in canning this Jim Caret dead-ringer.

May 15, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Who does Rick think he is? Pat Riley? Maybe he's trying to imitate the fast-break style of the 80's Lakers. Jason Kidd plays the role of Magic Johnson, and Dirk plays the role of Kareem. Actually, Dirk keeps getting compared to Larry Bird.
Jaculator - Rick belongs in Texas. He isn't going to get canned for at least a couple years. Just the name "Rick" bodes well for his staying in the big white man's state. Rick Adelman is in Houston. Our own Vice President - a good ol' Texas boy - has the name "Dick", which is derived from "Richard", which is an alternate form of "Rick".
As long as you have a simple (preferably one-syllable) name, you're good for Texas. The 3 coaches' names are Rick, Rick, and Greg. The White House is run by Texans George and Dick (or Richard). The Mavericks are run by Mark and Don.

everybody runs ,how about a offense with a rhyme or reason.

May 15, 2008  10:03 AM ET

OK... do they test coaches for drugs because judging from Ric's looks in this picture and the one from the next story, I can tell you he is hitting the pipe hard.

May 15, 2008  10:26 AM ET

How about trading Dirk for some players that aren't afraid to bang under the basket with David West?

May 15, 2008  11:08 AM ET

No I-pods and lights out at 8.

May 15, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Yada, Yada,Yada. Dallas will continue to be disappointed in April until they find an inside post presence. Carlisle will win 50 games again, and go fishing in May.

May 15, 2008  01:15 PM ET

Rick are you nuts? Dirk might break a fingernail. Dallas getting tough is like the Suns playing D.

May 15, 2008  01:21 PM ET

lol, what a solid argument JayL, basing the quality of the coach by the syllables in their first name. maybe you have a point though, Phil Jackson is pretty good, Sam Mitchell won coach of the year last year, Stan did alright with the Magic, Flip with the Pistons and as you mentioned Greg and Rick with Spurs and Rockets, respectively. and NY just hired Mike! or "Mark" as some papers have referred to him. i think you're theory may work beyond the borders of texas... you're a genius!

May 15, 2008  01:22 PM ET

***sorry your theory (not you're)

Here you go again w/ your blackness. You love creating trouble. You are discriminating all the great black coaches and players from Texas. You probably have never been to Texas. They don't have people like you there. You probably don't know that a lot of the hick town that you believe are whiteness are actually populated by mix race of people who don't believe in racism and really get along really well no matter what race they are.

Wow that would really be a great deal for the Hornets. Just imagine if the Hornets got Dirk? They will be 100x better. C-Smith, you probably don't watch the Mavs. Dirk doubles D. West statistics. Dirk will open up the Hornets offense especially w/ CP3 there.

May 15, 2008  02:33 PM ET

Cuban can go suck and egg. Jason Kidd is over-rated. So is Dirk. Good players, but If I was Kidd I wouldn't have let so many keys go to New Jersey.

Hey Guam, nice race card... loser

May 15, 2008  03:05 PM ET

Get off Dirk's nuts! Maybe if J. Kidd would have hit some of those open Jumpers New Orleans gave him all series, Dallas would still be in the playoffs. I admit that I was all for J. Kidd trade, but I didn't watch NJ to know what a loser J. Kidd would turn out to be. Sorry Devin Harris, we miss you in Dallas.

Guam Baller, while i agree with some of what you're saying in principle, you can't honestly believe that people in texas "don't believe in racism"... racism is EVERYWHERE, part of the problem is people thinking it doesn't exist anymore or that people "don't believe in it"

(sorry to take away from the main topic)

May 15, 2008  04:25 PM ET

It's funny how I become a racist all of a sudden just because I used the word blackness. Wow that really hurts a lot for y'all. I guess it's okay for somebody else to be racist such as saying whiteness. If you are offended of what I said and you're not offended of what JayL said then there is something is wrong with you. You are prejudice and you forgot what Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting for. "Equality"

What a hypocrite. You forgot to read mine. I was just defending your equal rights and you say that I'm a racist. Please read all the others too and start defending all human kind and not only your kind even though he is wrong.

Don't forget King of Hair, Governor Rick Perry!

Regarding Texas' love of monosyllabic monikers, especially derivatives of Richard. Staying entirely on topic, of course!
