Schmidt closer to Dodgers return

Pitcher Jason Schmidt took a giant step Wednesday toward returning to the Dodgers rotation, throwing six shutout innings in a rehab start for Class-A Inland Empire in San Bernardino. Pitching for the first time since April 14, the right-hander gave up only two hits and struck out seven, fanning a rehabbing Garret Anderson of the Angels twice on six pitches. Most important, however, is that Schmidt said he "felt great" after throwing 71 pitches, 51 for strikes. And he averaged 88 mph with a fastball that reached 91 on occasion.

How's the offense coming along? That's what LA needs the most right now.

Schmidt topping off at 91mph just makes him useless. This guy is making serious money. Right now, this signing looks pretty bad. I like how the Mets stayed away from him. Just not worth the risk.

Giants not signing Schmidt was a good thing. He is always hurt. If you take what he is paid and see what they pay him it is more then what Zito is being paid.

for all the dodger haters, we all should know great pitching pays off towards the end of the season and in the playoffs. all the weak pitching staffs will slowly start fading away (like the giants) wait and see !! then post your stupid comments. .. will see the mets in the nlcs and beat them in seven!!!!

Interesting how people alter their recollections to continue believing in their teams... RE: THE METS PASSING ON HIM - they never had a chance, we all knew he wanted to stay on the West Coast. RE: THE GIANTS NOT SIGNING SCHMIDT BECAUSE HE'S ALWAYS HURT - I love it - the guy pitches 1000 innings for you in 5 years and he's '"always hurt".

Jason Schmidt spent the past 5 season playing for a team whose pitching was so weak that they'd force him out there when he was hurt, simply because him at 75% was better than anyone else on the staff at 100%.

Look out for the Dodgers down the stretch - yeah we need a bat but I'll take the Penny-Schmidt-Lowe-Wolf-Broxton-Saito combo down the stretch against anyone.
