Babcock staying in Detroit
Posted: Thursday May 15, 2008 07:50AM ET
Like recently ousted Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville, Detroit's Mike Babcock has a contract that expires after this season. But Babcock has little or no reason to consider that a problem. In response to a question about his contract situation on the off day between Games 3 and 4 in the Western Conference finals, Babcock Tuesday triggered laughs from reporters at the American Airlines Center when he responded: "I think about it every day." Then he added, "No, I'm staying in Detroit. I mean, we'll get all that worked out." He said it all could wait until after the playoffs.

Im sure babcock and Illitch trust each other enough that they said no worries we'll get this done after the playoffs....and mean it!

Report Offensive CommentThose warm, fuzzy feelings might change if they don't win the Cup.

Report Offensive CommentBabcock stands to get an awfully BIG contract from someone. Probably the Wings but there will be no shortage of suiters that will drive his price up.

Report Offensive CommentIt's kinda funny that this story was in the Denver Post. Matter of fact, it was written by Terry Frei, the same guy who wrote the story about Todd McLellan being interested in the Avs job. Anyway, of course Babcock isn't going anywhere. He's done a great job there, and he's gonna win the Cup. Why would you wanna leave Detroit's bench right now? And I guarantee that Detroit wants him back. This is definitely a no-story.

Report Offensive CommentWe don't win the cup more than we win it. If he didn't get fired last year when the wings manage to break the hearts of hockey fans in hockey town this year with a 3-1 lead in the west finals it would take an epic collapse to cost him his job. That is assuming that even a historical collapse of almost unheralded magnitude could cost a coach who has done such a good job to this point his Job. I mean it's not his fault that the NHL introduced a salary cap and he has to coach in the shadow of the NHL's version of the Yankees.

Report Offensive CommentCan't see him leaving. There's no reason to leave, either.

Report Offensive CommentHe'll get re-signed. Back-to-back Final Four appearances should do it. I never really thought about it...but he does deserve his Adams nomination.

Report Offensive CommentThree is a charm, Donerik! They got bounced by the Oilers two years ago and they got bounced last year. They stuck with the plan and the Red Wings kept getting better as a team. They're monstruous right now and the toast of the NHL and are expected to win it all. But, what if .....? In hockey, there are no guarantees, you know?

Report Offensive CommentPow... I know that Terry Frei has a good hockey background. I'm a CO lifer, and a die-hard Avs and Broncos fan. I know how it works around here. My point was that it's kinda weird that they would put a story from the Denver Post about Detroit's coach as a national rumor on the SI website.
