Walsh: Patriots knowingly broke rules

In an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, Matt Walsh disputed several statements given by Coach Bill Belichick, who has insisted that he misinterpreted the league's rules and described the impact of the tapes as minimal, telling The Boston Globe in February that the value of the tactics rated as a 1 on a scale of 1 to 100. Walsh's view differs from that of the Patriots, the NFL and anyone else who contends that the videotaping of opponents' signals had little effect on the Patriots' performance. His vantage point was from behind the lens, inside the Patriots' organization and further inside the small, secret circle of coaches and staff members who, Walsh said, knowingly broke NFL rules to gain advantages in future games. "The information we were gathering was meant to help us the next time we played a team," Walsh said. "If it was 1 out of 100, we probably wouldn't have felt the need to do it as often as we did. Or go to the lengths we did to ensure getting the film." The taping felt wrong, Walsh said, and that notion was reinforced when his supervisor, Jimmy Dee, told Walsh to keep his videotaping quiet. Walsh said Dee gave him alibis to use if suspicions arose with other teams. If someone questioned why Walsh was filming an opposing sideline, he was told to say he was shooting the chains and the down-and-distance marker. If a team asked why the Patriots needed a third videographer, Walsh was instructed to say the coaches wanted two end-zone shots or tight footage. After filming opponents' signals, Walsh said a quarterback -- he declined to say whom -- would learn the signals, and the next time the Patriots played that team, the quarterback would relay that information to Charlie Weis, who would use the coach-to-quarterback communication system to send the information to the field.

cheaters never prosper. Of course the NFL is going to try to take the Patriots side and back them up.....if they don't then the whole league loses credibility and fans/money/support....etc....its just like baseball....since the steroids reports....homeruns will be down over 1,000 homeruns in the league since 2006, pitchers fastballs are way down. All of this just supports that you really dont need to be an athlete to "succeed" in both of these sports. Take some steroids and you'll make some money. Soon enough ESPN will start to focus on some real sports like Hockey and Soccer....where you really need to be an athlete and have some brains to play.....not be 40 years old and have a beer belly and can't run 20 yards without being out of breath.........I can't wait to see the replies I get to this.....but please...only reply with proper english, no ebonics, and if you have ever played 'competitive' sports.....(playing in 2nd grade or in high school doesn't count)

I'll respond.

Drop dead.

Clear enough for you?

The Patriots should be stripped of all Super Bowls and Tom Brady and Bellicheat should never be allowed in the Hall of Fame. The people of Boston should be ashamed. This is a complete embarrasement to the State of Massachusettes. Cheating must just be a way of life for them.

May 16, 2008  06:51 AM ET

Where is Massachusettes? I don't see it on the map. By the way, I said this yesterday, you are waaaaaayyyy too involved in this. Move on. Also, Oswarld acted alone and terrorists really did take down the Twin Towers.

May 16, 2008  07:03 AM ET

In no way am I a Patriots fan, in fact I can't stand them, but I am sure they are not the only team that does this. As the old saying goes, cheating is only cheating when you get caught.

May 16, 2008  07:09 AM ET

if 'misinterpret the rules' means 'we tried to get away with it and got caught' then I completely totally agree with Kraft cheatin cheese and Belichick.

May 16, 2008  07:19 AM ET

As a steelers fan(I know it's wierd, coming from L.A.) I always felt that something was weird about the way that the Steelers played against the Pats in the AFC of '02 and also in '05,I know that teams spend a lot of time watching film and all that, but for some stretches of those games, the Pats were dominating and making big plays like they knew what was coming and I know that at the very end is all about execution and timing, but now with all this Spygate crap,as a NFL fan, don't you wonder until what extend videotaping illegally your opponent defensive signals, could give you the edge to beat them? ...And just for the record,I think the Pats are a great team and they have great players, but now with all this controversy,is in the best interest of the Patriots organization to come forward and be straight and clean about all the facts involving this scandal and then we all can move on....

May 16, 2008  07:26 AM ET

Belechick's credibility is as much in question as Walsh's, however tapes DON'T LIE! The best Belichick could come up with was "I didn't know it was illegal." Tey that one with the cops in the real world if you break the law and see how far it gets you. Cheating is Cheating. I agree with LF24, it seemed like the Pats knew what was coming and made it look way too easy.

The NFL needs to come clean on this and the Pats warrant further punishment. Forget the "dynasty" talk forever!

There is no owner or coache in the NFL that believes the Pats got any competitive advantage that caused them to beat their teams/
--------------------

I think with new revelations coming to light, that may change. They discussed this at length on Sirius yesterday. Even Don Shula said it depended on what the tapes showed. If they had the signals prior to the game, then yes, it would give them an advantage.

I'll be watching the interview tonight on HBO.

The saddest part is the integrity of the game has been compromised. The Patriots as a team are a great team. Their coach though, as done to football what the Black Sox did to baseball. Football needs to come clean and state what will be done in the future to cheaters.

I for one would like the electronic devices in helmets banned. How do I know that when a play is in motion that someone does not tell the QB someone is open. Next I would slap sanctions on a team like the NCAA does, a ban from playoffs for 2 - 5 years depending on the infraction. As for the person committing the rule violations, ban them for life. As for the owner, make the violation hurt by either reducing the teams funds for signing players, or just fine the team a percentage of their gate proceeds.

As for Belicheat, Goodell as a choice, either do nothing and watch Belicheat get ridiculed from town to town, or ban him for life. The game's integrity is at stake here, and that is more important than one individual. A message must be sent that if we come down hard on players for doing things off the field - PACMAN, then we must come down harder for people compromising the game on the field. I am not a Patriot hater, but I am a football fan who has seen the game's integrity fall to an all-time low.

Well just my opinion and I hope people have a great summer. Best wishes and good luck to everyone and their teams.

This guy must need allot of attention... he said/she said... it is over. Deal with future ways to stop issues like this and move on..

May 16, 2008  07:57 AM ET

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) told the Boston Globe: "With the war in Iraq raging on, gasoline prices closing in on $4 a gallon, and Americans losing their homes at record rates to foreclosure, the United States Senate should be focusing on the real problems that Americans are struggling with. I'm looking forward to another great Patriots season, where they can let their play on the field speak for itself."

So larry, you have to resort to name calling and trying to degrade my teams. How adult of you.
Which team more recently won a super bowl? Without cheating by the way. When's the last time the Bruins did anything? Oh yeah, the last time they were good, the Pens kicked rtheir a**es...twice in route to the cup. Not jealous in the least...trust me. See you in the Cup finals...something you may never see again!

Hooah!05 - Cranky! |

I think it's in the same part of the country as Road Island.

Wow someone certainly has to live vicariously through an NFL team. Possibly to account for their failures as a human being. I'm sorry you feel so deeply cut by the revenlations that your 'hereoes' are a bunch of cheaters and liars. Maybe its time you get a real role model and stop hanging your happiness on the success of a shady organization that only got off light because they're in tight with the commissioner. He'll ban someone for a year for OFF the field troubles but only levies a small fine against someone who has been knowingly cheating for years. Yeah thats impartial.

It would be funny if now they get their asses kicked.

Yes it would, but you have to remember that they were caught taping in week 3 (I think). Even after that they went on to an undefeated regular season. Doesn't really seem that the signal taping had much outcome on the rest of the season

May 16, 2008  08:27 AM ET

buford, yeah it would.
