Strahan wants $8M to return

Michael Strahan doesn't appear to be close to announcing his future plans, but there is something the Giants could do to push things along. They could give him $8 million. That's the amount Strahan hopes to get from the Giants for what would likely be his final season with the team - and possibly in the NFL - if he decides to return to play in 2008, according to two sources familiar with his situation. That would be double the $4 million salary he's due this season in the final year of the seven-year, $46 million deal he signed in 2002. In a meeting with Giants' officials in March, Strahan was told, "We'll take care of you" financially, according to a source, but the Giants weren't specific about those plans. According to one source, Strahan has been told the team is willing to go as high as $6 million for one season.

8 million for one more year. He ain't that good anymore.

May 16, 2008  07:24 AM ET

Strahan has got a lot of fire, if the giants organization can afford it, I say give it to him.

May 16, 2008  07:48 AM ET

His play may not be worth 8 million but when you factor in the leadership he gives the defense and the drive that motivates the team he is definitely worth 8 million. I am pretty sure they have the extra 4 million in cap space they would need but they probably won't announce anything until the early pick rookies are taken care of.

The ripple effect. If you give him 8 mil, what do you give Osi? What do you say to their best D player ( Tuck )???6 would be fine for one year, any more and it is not worth it..Kiwanuka can back to his best position ( DE) and the new linebackers from the draft and DeOssie and Wilkerson can fight it out at LB...Reese is no fool and he is not going to give 8 mil to Strahan now.. There is an end to everything, guess if that is what it takes to get him back for one more year, then it is time to pack it in...

lol we aren't even in July yet and its started..

Greed

May 16, 2008  08:02 AM ET

With so many athletes making more... sad to say it is a bargain. He is a leader and his passion motivates the defense to the next level. I would have left on top and finished my legacy as a superbowl champion., Unlikely if he returns that he wil finish nearly as well next year. The next year for the SB champ is always much harder..

May 16, 2008  08:02 AM ET

His play was good enough all of last season to assist in the Giants making and winning the Superbowl. His presence on the field is always felt coupled with the experience quotient I say give it to him and let him ride into the sunset like the warrior that he is.

May 16, 2008  08:13 AM ET

I say give the MFer the money.

May 16, 2008  08:15 AM ET

He wants $8mil because his ex-wife will take at least $5mil of it.

May 16, 2008  08:17 AM ET

The story says he gets $4mil, but his contract is for an average of $6.5, which undoubtedly was structured by him to get more upfront. He should be reminded of this by the Giants, who should then kick in another $1.5 to bring him even with Taylor.
where in the freaking article says that " HE WANTS" $8 millions....???
Besides he of any player deserves it!!! Come G-men dont turn on our players like other fans do!
Give him the damn money!

May 16, 2008  08:33 AM ET

uhh, see ya...

May 16, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Is this a Joke, or is he just the Joke... This is a rediculous request, he's a pass rusher, and not even that good at that anymore. Thats about 1mil a sack

May 16, 2008  08:52 AM ET

I beg of you not to believe the story -- I am I is the man girlfirend plese dont turn on Strahan please he deserves the money , he has earned it....without him we would be nothing I tell you, nothing.

May 16, 2008  08:57 AM ET

as a football fan I say tell him to bite it, BUT as a true BIG BLUE fan I say give it to him, by him saying it is his last year and winning the super bowl last season the stadium will be full for every home game and hell can you say repeat, I can, LETS GO GMEN.

May 16, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Give him 6mil not 8 otherwise he can sit. He's still not going to show up for camp if you give him 8 that's why he's waiting to ask for it (just in case they do)
then he's going to play himself into football shape 3 to 4 games, which will increase his chance to get hurt or not immeadiately impact the team onfield. Remember last year was his only healty year in 3 years and even then he was in a rotation all game long. This will set a bad precedence with all the talented pass rushers we have and then everybody will be expecting the same type money.

May 16, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Go Jr Nation............you are correct.
Can we say one more.......REPEAT

May 16, 2008  09:03 AM ET

I believe we have a team capable of repeating but it would be hard to do it if we have to go on the road again ....

I see the G-MEN dominating the 2000's we will win 2 more SB in the next 6 years

May 16, 2008  09:03 AM ET

We shall overcome -- Keep hope alive - We shall repeat!
