A-Rod's Manny message irks fans

Yankees fans expressed their outrage on talk radio yesterday after they learned Alex Rodriguez had taped a message for Manny Ramirez, one which will be played at Fenway Park after the Red Sox slugger joins A-Rod as a member of the 500 home run club. A-Rod's message to those fans? Ramirez's accomplishment has nothing to do with the rivalry, but is rather an historic accomplishment by one of the game's great hitters. "This is bigger than the Yankees and Red Sox," Rodriguez said. "This is baseball history. How many guys have 500 home runs?"

Agreed with Arod.

May 16, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Hey, take it up with Manny. He asked Arod to do it.

Bosox fans need to get over it. Arod was willing to take less $$ to go there and only the MLPA stopped it. I don't get the hate.

This is a non-story.

As much as fans want to pretend otherwise, most pro players are buddies off the field. A-Rod and Manny are friends, and Manny asked A-Rod for a message. A-Rod did nothing wrong, he is supporting a friend. If some beer-swilling fan has a problem with it, these guys really don't care. Tough.

Yankee fans have always been the rational sort anyway, right?

A fine message, for a very good hitter. what's the problem?

Yankee fans will always find something to cry about. I think its a natural law or something.

May 16, 2008  08:51 AM ET

so it's not about Boston fans. If you don't get Sox fans feeling towards A-Rod, then you don't get the Sox-Yankees rivalry...which is clear from your post.

You're right. I didn't read it. AROD SUCKS.!

Seriously some people need to get a life.

But please, don't tell me I don't know abou the rivalry. I was listening to the radio at work when Bucky went yard! HAHAHAHA!

The Sox fans have no reason to hate Arod. It's ridiculous.

"then you don't get the Sox-Yankees rivalry...which is clear from your post."

ohhh we get your little "rivalry" its all a creation of ESPN.

15 years ago yankees-red sox was a one sided affair that might loosely resemble a baseball divisional rivalry(of which there are many)

only since the red sox actually won anything did people start calling it a "rivalry" but anyone who isn't a boston homer knows that the yankees just owned you up until recently....thats not a rivalry thats like a texas v. rice annual beatdown

This comment was funny:

I don't care if he and Manny get a hotel room, just get back to playing so we can stop this slide. Manny Clause I hope you don't hit # 500 bro. But if and when you do I got the over under your gonna stand there and stare for 15 seconds

Giant Killer, I agree that a lot of the rivalry is media driven, but it's been aroudn for awhile. And it's mostly on he part of Boston. The city and the fans have had an inferiority complex about the Yankees and NY forever. And they are apparently still very insecure. You'd think with 2 WS in a few years, they'd be happy, but no.....

Witness their rabidly paranoid reaction to the Spygate scandal and their whining about the Super Bowl.

its not a rivalry when you get beat for 100 years and then finally start winning some this past decade. red sox - yankees rivalry is an product of espn original entertainment

May 16, 2008  08:56 AM ET

A-Rod is right. Regardless of the rivalry, 500 is quite a feat.

What are you 12? There is a rivalry and there was one well before the ESPN generation.
