Was Horry's foul a cheap shot?

Posted: Friday May 16, 2008 09:00AM ET

The Hornets think Robert Horry may have intended to do what he did to David West. In another second round, in another potentially series-changing moment, Horry had bumped into another guy with a bad back. Tyson Chandler summed up the mood of the locker room when asked if Horry's blow had been intended for someone already with a bad back. Chandler admitted to not seeing the play, but Horry's presence confirmed the worst. "I wouldn't doubt it," Chandler said. They were angrier when the crowd chanted Horry's name about that time, with West on the ground and in pain.

Everything is rougher in the playoffs. But you could tell Horry really drove himself into West's back, which they know has been bothering him. You dont see the Jazz driving themselves into Kobe's back, you didnt see the Hornets taking advantage of all of the Tim Duncan injuries/excuses in the first 2 games.

What goes around comes around though horry. I hope you get lost and end up in the ninth ward Monday. Scratch that, I want a fully healthy Spurs squad for this A-S-S whooping the Hornets are going to put on the Spurs. Then he can get lost in the ninth ward.

If you listen carefully, you can still hear Tim Duncan crying about something. what a whiny baby that guy is, geesh.

David West has been trying to Bully in the paint the entire playoffs. Looks like he can't take as good as he gives.

Report Offensive Comment

Horry is a great veteran and knows how to win. The Hornets need to get over it.

To all of you trying to make this about David West and saying "this is the playoffs", your bias is showing. I respect everything the Spurs have done over the last decade and they're one of my favorite teams because it's not about one guy, it's about the TEAM concept. That being said, what Horry did last night was a cheap shot, much in line of what he did to Steve Nash last year. I just don't understand why Big Shot Bob has to resort to this kind of cheap play. The guy is one of the all-time clutch shooters and playoff performers in history and he cheapens his place by these antics. There was absolutely no reason to blindside David West in the back, whether you like him or not. The game was in control, there was no comeback and the play was unnecessary on many levels. It just feeds those conspiracy theorists who think the Spurs are all about trickery, whining to the refs and flagrant fouls instead of the chemistry, team basketball and individual brillance of Duncan, Parker and Manu. What Robert Horry did was not a "veteran" play, it was dirty play and for no reason whatsoever.

Thank you for summarzing the incident to perfection.

Horry is only perceived great because he hit a few 3's while he was playing for some GREAT teams. In no way does it make him a "great" player. Clutch player, absolutely. Great player, far from it.

Report Offensive Comment

I agree with Moe. What the Spurs do so well is play together as a team. But that was a cheap shot and it is not the first time the Spurs have done things like this in the playoffs over the past few years.

Please, spare me the ignorance is bliss. Horry has played long enough to know how to cheap shot opposing players. Bowen does too. It's sad when guys like that have to resort to cheap and dirty plays, like flopping to try and win games. It all starts with the coach. A little pep talk to get under the other teams skin. Hmmm...maybe by subtlety hitting their opposing players where it hurts...it worked with Nash, and I'm sure Popovich hinted that it would work with West. Nothing has to be said specifically by coach Pop. Just take care of it is all that needs to be said to Horry or the other dirty player Bowen. None of the other Spurs players play to injure the opposing teams stars. The only starter who is worth ANYTHING is Parker. That dude has the skills, and does NOT need to resort to the cheap and dirty tactics of his teammates...if you can call Horry and Bowen that. Such is life. Karma is like that. I wonder when and how long Bowen and Horry have been playing dirty like that? They must have at some point in their careers decided that it's not right, but if it will help my team. If they pulled any of those stunts on the school yard court, they would have paid for it right away. So it must have started in college or the pro's.

Think what you want, but Horry and Bowen are dirty players. Plain and simple. I wonder if the Spurs can win playing basketball...kinda like the New England Patriots without all the stolen signals...hahaha...but that a story for another day.

This is a joke. I don't like West but I hate that he got hurt. I don't like to see any player go down, especially one who could completely change the game and West does. The thing is that I don't see a single thing cheap or wrong in what Horry did this time. People will bring up Nash and I'll agree 100% that was bad but this was positional post up play. If West hadn't fallen to the floor then he would have been pushed forward a bit and Horry would have cleared a little room for a pass down low. You see this exact thing, and MUCH WORSE every other play as players fight for low post presence. Hopefully West will be back for game 7 and the Spurs will take them down with a full roster. Then again I won't be too upset because I've liked the Hornets ever since I saw CP3 play. Fun to watch.

NOT a cheap shot -- plays like this happen numerous times during any game ... Horry was standing his ground and it was a combination of this and West backing up. In fact, Horry had his arms crossed on his chest and West backed into him, Horry moved FWD to block and they came together. There was no "punch" "jab" or whatever could be preceived as a "cheap shot". The play was blowin' out of proportion by those at ESPN -- to show last years "cheap shot" just thru petrol on the fire!

Report Offensive Comment

It looked like Horry gave him a bit of a shove after he went up, hard to call it a planned attack, maybe opportunistic, and marginally over-aggressive. This series has seen quite a few hard fouls - I remember seeing Parker on the floor without a called foul in game 4, more than once. Hard fouls are expected, but when it happens to an already injured player, then we are all critical of the foul. All in all, it unfortunately is part of the game. No one was jumping on Chandlers foot last night, and no one was kicking Manu's ankle. It is easier for us all to criticize the foul after the fact when we watch it in slow motion, repeatedly. It was a hard foul, unfortunate, and I hope West can recover to be full strength on Monday - this is the best series in Playoffs.

Horry and Bowen do seem to always find the controversial cheap shot or opportunity. Coincidence? I don't think so.....

I couldn't agree more. People are crying that we are biased if we think Horry did nothing wrong but the truth is that their OWN biased view is tainted by the past cheap shot by Horry to Nash, and possibly other cheap shots. I am not judging the person's history but the incident in question. As I said before, what happened to West was MILD compared to most of the scrambles for low post presence throughout an entire game in EVERY game. You bring up a good point that Horry even had his hands crossed. Thank God he didn't do what 99% of the post up players do and extend their arm to the back (or front) of the guarding player to create space. Then people would have blown that out of proportion and called it a PUNCH.
Bottom line - people are letting the Nash incident have an effect on their judgement of a ROUTINE play. Watch any game of the playoffs and you will see FAR worse among players fighting for low post positioning.

I wish you would STOP saying that. It is even worse than arejaydub (spelling?) and his "Lovely in Laker Land" gloating arrogant saying. The bad thing is that you make people dislike other Texans who just love good basketball and support their teams. Lastly, you leave yourself to look like an idiot if the Spurs lose. Same goes for the "lovely in Laker land" crowd. If the Lakers lose then I doubt I'll keep seeing this statement and the same for you and your Texas statement.

Im a Laker fan...I dont have a bias here...I love robert horry (laker days)..but that was a cheap shot and the game has no place for that....david west is an allstar...he plays hard and I've never heard anything negative about him off the court....horry should be suspended for game 7...if david west was to step on tim duncan foot with his long history of foot problems, there would be league wide outrage....im sorry but that game looked fixed to me....the ref's called 2 entirely different games from the first half to the second..just my opinon

What about what Jason Kidd did in the first round slinging that guy to the ground? I dont hear people bitching about that as much as about this! Are you serious? He posted a back screen, and like someone said before, Everytime you post a back screen you bring your hands up to the lower back, but Horry didn't do that! He crossed his arms and leaned into the check so that he wouldnt give up his positioning to West as he was backing up into the lane. If your tired of seeing the Spurs win then quit watching the Games! Y'all are a bunch of whiners! DAMN!
