White not sorry to see Tito leave

Posted: Saturday May 17, 2008 09:07AM ET

As Tito Ortiz's final fight under Ultimate Fighting Championship contract draws nearer, he's been vocal to the media about his plans to leave the mixed martial arts promotion following his UFC 84 bout with Lyoto Machida. In a pre-fight media conference call, UFC president Dana White addressed the former light heavyweight champion's future. "I think Tito has made it very clear when he talks to everybody what his future in the UFC is," said White. "The UFC is where the best fighters in the world fight, and you put all the animosity aside between me and him, and, realistically, when was the last significant fight that Tito Ortiz won?"

he's not been impressive in years. I think the game has passed him by.

Spending too much time "training" with Ms. Jameson.

Tito was the man before the UFC started to bring in better fighters. He was the best that they had at one point in time, but now he just got passed up in talent. He has had nothing but lackluster performances since coming back to the UFC. Machida will send him out with with a submission.

"Rock you can beat this guy" !!!

Tito is over the hill... but can still sell tickets and ratings for other organizations that will, no doubt, love to have him onboard

Dana's a moron. I agree that Ortiz's best is behind him but as if the UFC has all best fighters. They don't want to all be underpaid and underworked. Dream (JPN) will start getting some of the former Pride fighters back.

Bozo made a huge error paying gazillions for a fight organization than made gazillions to only let it die. What a clown, and he's considered a good businessman? I think White has an overinflated ego.

Rhymeister, you may not like Dana, but look at the UFC's numbers since he has taken over. He has been a major force in MMA going mainstream. I would have liked to have seen Pride stay alive too, but they overpaid their fighters and look what happened to them. Dana White has done a good job of growing the sport and has grown he stable of UFC fighters through the Ultimate fighter TV show. Like him or hate him he has done a ton for MMA in the US.

I think the UFC needs ortiz. And I also think that white is gay for liddell. Im serious it is sick. I think white will realize how important ortiz is when he is gone, he isnt what he once was, but he sells tickets and he is fun to watch. Liddell is growing closer to the end too.

TL, when was the last time you go excited to see Tito fight? THe UFC has plenty of fighters and I won't be sorry to see Tito move on. Like Hank says above, when was the last time Tito beat someone? I think his last win was against Forrest, and a lot of people thought Forrest won that fight. There's no arguing that White is a Chuck fan, but last time I checked Chuck knocked Tito out twice.

Report Offensive Comment

He only fought ONCE in 2007 (which was a draw). And then lost to Chuck Liddell in 2006. He's not THAT washed-up, people. Before the Chuck loss, the last loss was to Chuck in 2004.

Report Offensive Comment

last time I checked chuck was getting knocked out also........

Report Offensive Comment

Chuck is actually older and closer to the end than Tito is. That's common sense.

Report Offensive Comment

Yeah Dana seems to be in some sort of man love for CHuck.. i think Chuck is closer to being done than Tito is..
I think this is great for Tito.. he needs to get out.. He and The maniac will do pretty well outside of the UFC.. relationships change and sometimes u need to get the hell away..
BTW Chuck is lucky his old **** hammy went out on him Rashad Evans was gonna kick his ****..

Report Offensive Comment

The reason White is partial towards Lidell is because Lidell always promoted the UFC In the best way possible. Oritiz has always felt his "above the sport", and when it backfired on him, he went the **** way out and stopped fighting.

i think that porn babe took away titos legs. Can you imagine having a porn star girl friend. How was your day today honey??? oh my costar ----------------------today

I would probably quit to if I was doing Jenna Jameson. Tito is a lover and not a fighter.

Jason70,
Look at how Japan now has Dream and World Victory Road. That could've been UFC Japan. Now tell me how is that smart business?

It would've been easy, IMO, for White and Co to revive Pride under a different name. Since it was NOW a foreign-owned entity (gaishikei) they could've skirted the Yakuza connection and gotten a contract w/ a terrestrial TV network and made tons of cash.

No, I stand by what I wrote Dana White is an idiot. Yes, he has done wonders w/ the UFC but I think a lot of it is luck and timing. MMA was ripe for tremendous growth....

I'm not saying every move he made has been good. I loved watching Pride events and think they screwed up letting it die off and just plundering the roster. As, I stated above I didn't like seeing it happen. I am not saying he is the greatest businessman in the world either. Luck and timing have a lot to do with a lot of people that are successful. Pride was sold for a reson, and it was because they were having financial trouble. They were paying fighters a lot more than anywhere else. And they had great fighters, but they couldn't afford them all. Dana has put the UFC on tv with the Ultimate Fighter and setup the UFC with a minor league of thier own to grow fighters from. I'm not saying everything he has done has been good, but he has done a lot of good for MMA. I think he comes off as very arrogant and a bit of an well, I'm sure you can guess, on TUF. He is slowly growing the UFC brand in Europe. I'm sure they are being careful and not wanting to overextend themselves. Did, they drop the ball in Japan? Absolutely. Are they not paying fighters enough? Some fighters seem to think so, but how much were fighters making before the UFC and in other organizations in the US?

Dana White didn't have anything to do with the UFC buying out Pride, by the way. He is the face of the UFC, but not the owner. The REAL owner of Zuffa made the deal to purchase Pride happen, and it is likely him letting it go by the wayside now.

Tito was an entertaining fighter in his day, there is no doubt, but he has looked pedestrian in his past 3 or 4 fights: The Rashad Evans fight was weak, he almost lost to Griffin, and he got knocked out by Chuck. He has become all hype with little substance. That is why his contract was not renewed. Dana knows to put personal differences aside for the good of the company. I mean, Sylvia's record should have been enough for them to re-sign him, but his fights are so s***ty and the fans dislike him so much that he was let go. Tito's gone, and whoever signs him will only be disappointed in what they get for their investment. Name recognistion will only go so far...
