Joba Chamberlain's transition to the rotation might be on season-long hold.In a revelation that was neither confirmed nor denied by general manager Brian Cashman, manager Joe Girardi admitted yesterday that Chamberlain might remain a reliever the entire year. "It's possible, yes," Girardi said when asked whether leaving Chamberlain in the bullpen could be done out of need. That admission conflicts with what had been the Yankees' stated plan for Chamberlain.

Hey Yankees you are not making the playoffs if you don't do something drastic now. Hell, Turnbrow got released didn't he? He had 40something saves not too long ago. Give him another chance but obviously as a setup guy and send Joba to the minors so he can start in the majors. DO SOMETHING YOU IDIOTS YOUR NOT MAKING THE PLAYOFFS OTHERWISE!

Give it up Yankee fans. The Yanks are gonna finish in fourth place.

May 18, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Yankees will not finish in front of the Rays this year. Tampa has better pitching, good hitting, and youth. It's gonna be a long season in the Bronx.

Girardi and Cashman passed on Santana because they've got Hughes, Kennedy, and Pettitte, and Farnsworth and Hawkins and Igawa in the pen ... with the team's apparent focus on a title shot sometime in the future rather than this year, and the anemic hitting of its millionaires [Giambi, Cano, Cabrera, Damon] and unwillingness to play fundamentally sound offensive baseball, why waste Joba this year at all? look at the lack of run support for Wang and Mussina. Joba can injure his arm throwing in relief just as well as starting, so why let him face criticism from other teams or Yankees past like Gossage for being maybe the only Yankees player who shows fire and enthusiasm during a year when the other players just want their paycheck and only the owner seems to really care about this year's Yankees day-to-day on-field performance, or lack thereof. It is simply not true that 'all Yankees teams' start the year slowly, nor that all previous pennant winning and/or World Series winning Yankees teams were in last place in the East on the 18th of May. It's time to step up, Yankees ... all the teams in East are too strong this year for the Yankees to continue losing and playing poorly while waiting for ARod and Posada to get healthy and back in the lineup.

What difference does it make who starts when you have Hawkins (ERA 6.05) and Farnsworth (ERA 4.05) pitching in the middle innings? The only thing Santana did better then Pettite yesterday was not having Farnsworth pitch an inning in 'relief' for him.

Joba may finish 2008 in the minors.....I think the league is catching up to him.

Second funniest thing I've heard all day.

the golden thongs are going to need a lot of relief pitching this year. can you imagine paying 200 million a year for this PCL pitching staff? a couple more years and the thongs are gonna be like the knicks

May 18, 2008  03:51 PM ET

Some people are so stupid. The Yankees arent finishing in 4th place. The Rays are better than before, but they wont be there in October. The Yankees are 5 back, without A-Rod and Posada for almost a month. Every year we hear the same thing and every year you people look like fools.

May 18, 2008  04:01 PM ET

believeintherookies -- only three times before have the Yankees been in last place at this time of the year ... yes, they CAN come back ... but it is naive/wishful to think that Hughes and Kennedy are first line starters this year, or that Melky is going to carry the team ... ARod was singularly unimpressive before his injury [especially compared to his April numbers last year, before the big new contract] ... and it is unrealistic to think that the other teams in the East are not much improved and playing with a passion and interest almost totally foreign to cool corporate 'Yankees baseball' ... and look at this ... BoSox get to whip up on the Brewers while the Yankees have to battle the Mets ... the interleague stuff isn't really 'fair' unless all the teams in a division play the same mooks from the other league

May 18, 2008  04:10 PM ET

Let's talk facts...the Yankee staff ERA is BETTER than it was last year. The bullpen has been VERY solid for the last month. Smart move to keep Joba in the pen; that's the best place for him now.

The problem is very obvious. They're just not hitting with RISP. In the 4 games against Tampa, they hit around .100. Against the Mets yesterday, 0 for 7.

The result? They're averaging about 4 runs/game over the last month or so. Simply put, they'll lose more than they win until they get that back up to the 6 runs/game they're capable of.

Exactly.

Tampa's young pitchers might keep them in there this year. Yankees young pitchers might want to try the golden thong.

May 18, 2008  08:09 PM ET

The Yankees should sign Roger Clemens again

May 18, 2008  08:33 PM ET

This sucks i just want the Yankees to start winning again

May 18, 2008  08:37 PM ET

Joe Morgan is retarded. There is no other explanation.
