Kiffin looking over shoulder

Al Davis' Raiders coaching staff appears to be as volatile as that surrounding his roster. Despite offseason reports that Davis asked for his resignation, Kiffin still has a job. But it's clear that Davis has reasserted his supreme authority over all things Raider. The players aren't blind. They see that. So the old Raiders-coach-as-Davis-puppet scenario is as viable as ever. As for Kiffin's goals of changing the team's culture and having greater authority than past Raiders coaches? Yeah, right. If Kiffin had more authority, Rob Ryan wouldn't be back as defensive coordinator, serving the final year of his contract. According to Kiffin, he and Ryan agreed to part ways after last season but Davis nixed that move. Then there's the James Lofton factor. Davis hired Lofton as Raiders wide receivers coach. It's important to note that Davis has interviewed Lofton for his top coaching job in the past. So you couldn't blame Kiffin if he took an occasional peek over his shoulder.

Kiffen should have went to Arkansas when he had the chance

Al Davis has turned the Raiders into the NFL's biggest punchline. They are now irrelevant.

May 18, 2008  10:39 AM ET

looking over his shoulder for the grim reaper comming for Al.

As a life long Raiders fan, this is just another reason I don't renew my directv football. I just don't care about them enough to pay to watch them. I live in Miami and am not a Dolphins' fan but it's quite exciting to watch them put together a new team, including the coaching staff.

Davis, however, is THE laughing stock of pro sports in this country; all the pro sports. I know he was instrumental in the merger and had a great set of teams in the 70's and early 80's but this destructive force has the team imploding. No respectable coaching candidate will head out there as long as Davis runs things.

At least the Bengals righted their ship after the abysmal mid and late 90's.

I like Kiffin. I think he's got great upside as a coach in football. He took a horrible situation and at least gave them some life. But he won't have the time to finish the project. Al will end up canning him or Kiffin will leave on his own. I believe it will be the second. Then the Raiders will have no real head coach.

Sad.

I am not going to argue Kiffin's merit. However he should have known that Davis is the WORST owner in the league.

May 18, 2008  11:54 AM ET

the old man needs to step aside as everything he touches turns to crap.

May 18, 2008  12:06 PM ET

You are so right Vaughn. The only thing that can save the Raiders at this point is Big Al finally lying down for his dirt nap. I'm sure there are many more around the organization that would help Lane tuck him in.

May 18, 2008  12:09 PM ET

What did this guy expect when he took the job? Why anybody would take a Raider's head coaching job is beyond me, unless they can't get hired anywhere else.

May 18, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Sorry about your team LocNar. I can't imagine coming to a state of apathy over my team. Here's hoping Al Davis kicks the bucket and maybe an heir or whoever takes over the organization breathes new life into them. I remember the Raiders from the 70's and early 80's. Tough, tough teams. They were feared NFL wide.

May 18, 2008  12:09 PM ET

VAUGHN you are so bang on! The Raiduhs are going absolutely nowhere until Big Al finally lays down for his dirt nap. Along with Lane, I'm sure there are many others within the organization who'll help tuck the Godfather in. We can then put the Excellence back into the Raider Committment to Excrement!!!

May 18, 2008  12:10 PM ET

How did the Raiders win ANY games last year? Or the year before that? Al Davis has no idea what he is doing anymore......not like I am the first to point that out.

May 18, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Imagine if they start the season with a couple loses.

May 18, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Hey Bandit77,
I kinda believe all the other teams in the league have simply gotten better over the years and the Raiders are trying to play on their laurells from yesteryear. Kiffin has no business being a head coach with the Raiders or anywhere else.

May 18, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Shynloco,

I guess your right. I saw them last year in Jacksonville, and they were just pathetic. I was embarrased just being there.

Jamarcus Russell is going to s.u.c.k. He looked like he had never seen or played the game before.....much less a first overall. They will be lucky to win 2 games this year.

On Kiffin I disagree. He is a really bright coach who works for a stupid and horrible franchise. He is probably too young right now, but I like his future.

May 18, 2008  12:45 PM ET

i am a raider fan and trust me nobody knows better then me how bad they are but to say Al Davis needs to take a dirt nap so they can get better is just rude...i mean its just football...its not like they are going to suck forever...but ppl just love to hate on the raiders anyway because even when they were good nobody had anything good to say and now that they are bad everybody is having the time of their life...and to LocNar you say your a fan but you don't even watch the games because the team is bad get your fair weather **** out of here...I am a real fan and i support the team through all things....Raider Nation

Is this even news worthy? Isn't this the same crap that has been circulating since the season ended? It looks like old news is better then no news. Not to mention the fact that no credible sources or even unnamed sources were used to back it up. Why doesn't everyone just settle down and let the the truth be known when the season starts?

May 18, 2008  12:52 PM ET

How is this even relevant? This is just another hater wanting to stir the pot. If you call yourself a Raider fan, then you live Raiders, you don;t just not watch them because they are rebuilding. Secondly, you haters make me laugh over all this Al Davis is the laughing stock of sports. Al Davis is a pioneer, a legend in football history. The funny thing is his moves this year are genius, especially when he helps get the owners out of the CBA and 2010 is capless. Then all the money he doled out is just pocket change. So you haters why don't you go to your own boards!! Remeber the Autumn wind is a Raider!

May 18, 2008  12:52 PM ET

The NFL needs to step in andgive AL D a senility test.. what do u do when a person refuses to relinquish control of a business and they are not mentally able to run it anymore. Kiffin was dumb for taking the job.. his old man is in the league and he should have known Al d was using depends. I see in the near future Goodell stepsin and makes the man in black turnover day to day control..

Exactly bedlam. Great comment. I'm an Oakland fan who is very very weary of Al Davis and do believe Lane should "look over his shoulder". But this is such old old news. What this is a desperate columnist with nothing to write about in May regarding the Raiders who rehashes old news with no sources at all to support the piece. Shame on fannation for even using in today's Truth&Rumors. Again, as I have said a lot recently about other "stories" in America's sports sections recently, respectable sports journalism is dying a slow painful death...

You idiot ChicagoJeff.....What has he done that is senile??? Besides help his team with better players? Its the same old junk every year, and when the Raiders start winning again it will be the same old "they cheat to win" mentality. You "nonfootball" bandwagon jumpers need to go back to the NE and NY boards!
