Sox scouts skimming bonuses

Posted: Sunday May 18, 2008 09:52AM ET

That David Wilder and two White Sox scouts were terminated amid an ongoing federal investigation of scouting and signing procedures in Latin America speaks loudly about the severity of the findings that revealed "violations of club policy and standards," according to the White Sox statement on the matter. An MLB investigator confirmed to the Tribune on Saturday that the probe involved skimming and that it currently is limited to the White Sox. Williams wouldn't say if financial improprieties were involved, but a source with knowledge of the probe said there were questions regarding the manner in which signing bonuses were distributed to Latin American prospects. Investigators were seeking to determine if Wilder and dismissed scouts Victor Mateo and Domingo Toribio were skimming from those bonus payments.

Skimming from the company, is a reason to get fired, Skimming and not reporting the same funds as income, is a federal offense obviously. It's been turned over to the Fed's. HERE WE GO AGAIN! Another black eye for MLB.

This is how things get done in Chicago! Mayor Daley and Jesse Jackson have been doing business this way for years and things get done! It's called the Chicago way!

Besides, they probably needed the money for bottled water!

Steveo, I don't hate the Sox. I just don't think they're much of a franchise at this point. Intellectually speaking, if baseball were to contract two teams, which would certainly be a great idea, the White Sox would be a great option. In fact, the best option. They won the Series in '05, yet still weren't even the number one team in the hearts of Chicagoans.

As for Ozzie, I think he actually did a good job in '05. But his time has come and gone, and the team doesn't seem to respond to him now. Look at Piniella, a similar type of guy. It works a year or two, then wears thin on the players.

The White Sox, like many teams, have its share of good fans. But I hear too many jerks mouthing about them. In fairness, I guess you could say that about every team, huh?

Honest Abe: I think Ozzie has the Sox playing pretty well this year too. Consider that their bats are still pretty cold and their middle relief has been inconsistent. In case you haven't noticed, they are in first place in their division and playing over .500. If their bats get hot, like they should (some of their players are usually slow starters), the sky is the limit like in 2005. I give a lot of credit to Ozzie for that. I can't imagine the Sox doing as well with any other manager given that other teams have more talent.
