Horry defends pick on West
Posted: Sunday May 18, 2008 09:20AM ET
Early in the fourth quarter of the Spurs' season-saving victory in Game 6 Thursday, Robert Horry set a hard back-pick on New Orleans star David West. The unsuspected blow sent West -- who already was battling back issues -- to the locker room for good. Horry would spend the next 24-hour news cycle being publicly fitted for a black hat, vilified as a cheap-shot artist in newspapers, on television and the Internet. In his first comments about the incident Saturday, Horry defended his actions, saying he harbored no ill intentions toward West. "It was a regular back-pick," said Horry, a 16-year veteran and the league's all-time leader in postseason games played. "I wasn't trying to hurt him. I'm sorry he got hurt, but that's the game of basketball." Coming a year after his hip-check on Phoenix's Steve Nash changed the complexion of another conference semifinal series, the Game 6 pick placed Horry at the eye of another swirl of controversy.

Horry is a cheap shot artist and a coward, who couldn't handle West on the court, so he had to try to injure him. I hope that West 'accidentally' knocks 4-5 of his teeth out.

Ok name 1 other cheap shot besides last years Nash shot? Didnt think so. This was not a cheap shot, it was a back pick that is legal. If this was TIm Duncan setting the pick this whould be a non story. Your words are reckless calling him a coward for setting a pic. Grow up kid!

Report Offensive Commentif it was on the other end horry would of flopped to the hospital
the real cheat on that team is bowen
he is a average defender and is only regarded so highly because they never make calls on him - probably sucks up to the refs

Report Offensive CommentHorry is at the end of his career and doesn't get much floor time so it would seem that he will push the envelope in terms of getting the most out of his minutes. Tough pick that was borderline and avery cheap shot on Nash last year.

Report Offensive Commentas the rule book states the screener has the right to protect him self from the person being screened. you just can not extend your arms out like paul did to bowen. it was a clean play. the one everyone needs to be mad at is the person on the hornets team responsible for hollering out to west about the back screen. byron scott even said it was not a dirty play. just like seeing the blind side of the QB. Bowen is not a cheat, he just knows the rules, what they say and how they are enforced. bowen has good defense because he moves his feet and does not reach in instead. He gets position before the offensive player does. guess people would like the Spurs more if the raped some one in Colorado, or suckerpunched some on on the court, or get on a drug dealers video, or rival Kemp in kids.

Report Offensive CommentI love Horry but he didn't have to take West down like that. The Spurs were up big so it made no sense.

Report Offensive CommentHard to imagine someone from the dirty San Antonio Spurs doing anything like this. So this happened last year against Phx who was giving them all they could handle, now it happens agains N.O who had their backs against the wall. Dirty players like Bowen and Horry are the reason the Spurs get so little respect. I hope N.O wipes the floor with them in game 7. If they dont, I'm sure Bowen will be sticking his foot under Kobe on every jumpshot to give the classless spurs a chance.

Report Offensive Commentthis pick was no different than the pick chandler put on parker in a previous game. the only difference was parker was not a drama queen.

This is freakin hilarious. How about this parallel: besides the Holocaust, name one mass killing by **** Germany. Fouls are part of the game, even hard fouls, but Rob has taken it to a different level in terms of attempting to alter games and series with his cheap shots. What's next, shorten someones career? Rob is so over the hill and so irrelevant in the game that hard fouls are perhaps all he has let....frightening.

In a career full of cheap shots it's hard to pick just one, but the one that sticks out in my mind is when he dropped Eduardo Najera with an elbow to the face as Najera streaked by him towards the basket. Not cheap enough? I'm sure if you had enough game film and time to watch it you could put together a whole clip show of Horry's cheap shots. At this point, he'll be remembered as much for his cheap shots as for his big shots. Like Bowen, he's a dual specialist ideal for a team like San Antonio; one part deep threat one part cheap *****.

Report Offensive CommentWhat a surprise.. The NBA has become so soft lately that any sort of physical play is seen as some sort of Crminal assault. Back in the Celtic/Laker days.. Fat Lever.. Dennis Johnson.. Stockton and others played physical and made u pay for driving to the hoop. The fans need to take off their panties and understand that basketball is a physical game and theplayers need to MAN UP during the playoffs.

Report Offensive CommentSee my problem is it wasn't a "regular back pick" because obviously the refs whistled a foul on him so they didn't see it as regular back pick he obviously put a little more into it otherwise the refs wouldn't have whistled a foul.
If the refs didn't call a foul I probably would have just been like man West needs to stop acting like a little girl.

Report Offensive Commentthat was a clean pick arms in maybe he leaned into him but not much and certainly not enough to even come close to hurting him if he didn't jump into the pick. I don't like Horry but this is one that was a basketball play not an attempt to injure.

Report Offensive CommentHorry's got nothing else left in the tank but to play dirty. He proved it last year against the Suns and he's doing it again. He's like a junior Bruce Bowen.

But hey, it's the playoffs, right? And besides, I'm sure his team is entirely thankful.

Report Offensive CommentI guarantee if Big Shot Rob was on your favorite team you guys would defend his every movement that the guy makes.
in fact he did the same exact plays that you guys would call a dirty play when he was with the Oompaa Loompaas aka lakers, but he was never criticized for it by any one.
hmmmm interesting

Report Offensive CommentHorry leaned in - that is the foul - no doubt. West was playing with an injury - brave and risky. West was in for a full practice Saturday so it seems this wasn't a serious issue. He was getting weaker/more injured as the game went on - the foul just brought it all out. Great that we get to see both teams at full strength for a Game 7.
The game today is full of floppers, sly moves, and thuggery. Nash is one of the great floppers, so is Manu. CP3 gets more pushes and punches in than anyone, even Bowen, because Bowen is watched much closer. Chandler and Duncan are shoving people around, over the back and pushing off throughout the game. Horry may have lost some of his magic 3 shooting this season, but he has experience that is valuable on the court. IF game 7 gets to be a shoving match, Hornets will win given the home court officating pattern. If they let them run, Spurs might be able to be beat the Hornets. If the officials call both sides tight, Spurs are likely to win with a better bench as starters on both teams foul out. I believe they will let them run and call it loose unless a fight breaks out.
San Antonio fans - shame on you for chanting Horry when West was down. I hope the Hornet fans show a little more class.
