The blown call on a Carlos Delgado fourth-inning shot that bounced off the left field foul pole was still reverberating in the umpires' clubhouse afterward, with home plate ump Bob Davidson giving a frank assessment of what turned out to be his incorrect ruling. "I ----ed it up. I'm the one who thought it was a ---- foul ball. I saw it on the replay. I'm the one who ----ed it up so you can put that in your paper," Davidson told reporters. "Bolts and nuts, I ----ed up. You've just got to move on. No one feels worse about it than I do."

Bob Davidson needs to stop being so arrogant out there....The thrird base ump made the correct call and Davidson overturned him very quickly. There should have been more discussion.

Plain and simple, there's a foul pole there for a reason. No ump should ever miss a home run call, and you should NEVER overturn the call of the guy closest to the play.

Besides...if it had counted, I would have left the game sooner and cried myself to sleep an hour or two earlier.

you have my sympathies 64...really, ya do, seriously ;)

At least he admitted that he messed up. If this had been a close game, it might have messed up the outcome of the real winner. And that would have been messed up!

May 19, 2008  08:19 AM ET

I agree with Becca... at least it ended up being non detrimental to the outcome... And its always nice to hear someone take responsibility for something.

Sorry carlos, but that ain't the first time nor will it be the last. That's just part of baseball. What ya want to do, use electroic eyes? Robots? No of course not, people make mistakes, umpires are pretty good most of the time. Call went agaisnt your team, that's baseball! you'll get them next time. 162 game schedule....

An ump admitted making a bad call?? He admitted it?? Holy Cow!!

May 19, 2008  08:30 AM ET

Like Clueless Joe Morgan, people here think that the umpires have slo mo zoom lens sight to see everything perfectly. They don't. The 3rd base umpire seemed confused so the other guy said he was sure. It didn't matter anyway.....

Seems like to me you're the one who's clueless here. Because the umpires don't have slo mo zoom, that's even more reason to get together and discuss what they SAW not what they think occurred. Bob Davidson is just an arrogant blowhard who wanted to flex his position. You NEVER overturn another umpire's call without being 100% certain you are right. Even if the other umpire seemed unsure, he still had the best angle.

He had no choice but to admit it. All of America saw the replay. I'm waiting for the MLB to say that "the umpires made the right decision under the circumstances. They followed the rules by coming together and discussing it." Actually they didn't discuss it. Davidson just walked in and said it was foul, end of story. What a jerk.

Tough weekend for the Yankees.....

they will start to rally when A-Rod and Posada come back, but how many games can they fall off before they start to rally?

Really tough to get beat by the pitcher who you wouldn't trade for...

and now even Dice-K, who they got outbid for, is now 7-0 with an ERA of 2.15....

All in all, a disaster so far for the Yankees....

May 19, 2008  09:09 AM ET

At least he admitted it.. that is news..

Damn people. Give him a break. He admitted he screwed up. People make mistakes.

May 19, 2008  09:11 AM ET

What's he mean by "I ed it up"? On behalf of all the Eds in America, I am launching a formal protest. Seriously, that's the most **** up thing I ever Ed.

It means "I fuked it up".

replays make that such an easy call, but that was a tough one on the umps because it hit that part of the pole that was not painted. Plus, the ball was tailing. The 3B ump didn't seem so sure about his call. You need to give the umps a break on this one.

The bigger questiion is why wasn't that section of the pole painted? Seems to me that would be a rule violation on the Yankees part. I'm sure the painter ran out of paint and thought that no one would hit it there.

They are somewhat under control now. Two weekends ago it was like a war zone though. It was almost literally in my back yard. My friend called me because he was hosing down his roof to ward off the flames. I tried to go over to assist him but the police had the area blocked off. It worked okay for him though in the end. However, several homes were burned to the ground. The worst part about all this, is that the fires were intentionally set. They have a suspect in custody though. Thanks for aking.

Sorry to hear about those fires. Glad you came out unscathed.

You need to give the umps a break on this one.

As an official myself (only high school), we are always taught that if you are not 100% sure, DO NOT MAKE A CALL. Davidson ran in there like he knew what was going on and like he said, he fuked up the call. I cannot give him a break on that because it could have cost a team the game, not to mention it will forever impair Delgado's stats. What if he finishes with 499 homers?
