Straightening out new hair rule

Hair we go again. When NFL owners gather in Atlanta for a one-day business meeting Tuesday, one item on the agenda is the reintroduction of the Kansas City Chiefs' proposal that would prohibit players' hair from going over the name or number on the back of their jersey. Now the proposal is back, and with some more time to digest and discuss it, there seems to be more understanding among all involved. Mainly, players who might have been initially upset now realize the proposal wouldn't require them to cut their hair, just tuck it in their helmets. And the Chiefs have spread word that the proposal is not based on a safety issue, but strictly on the NFL's dress code - just as a jersey must remain tucked in, and socks must be worn a certain way, they feel hair should be tucked in. So where does the Players Association stand on the proposal? According to NFLPA president Kevin Mawae, the players are willing to listen, but believe more information - specifically regarding safety - is still needed before a decision is made.

I have no problem with their hair being long but i don't want to hear any crying when it gets pulled.

I saw one time when they called a penalty
for that which to me gives players with long hair an advantage

Let the lil girls wear long hair, but make it part of the
uniform, and get it pulled a few times and they will be
chopping it off.

get a hair cut, girlie men...

the nfl rules are becoming ridiculous....why dont just dress them up in tights and ask them to play two hand touch.

Ricky Williams got pulled down by the hair against Buffalo way back when and decided to go Kojack after that.

Yeah eyes, let's see you call any of these players with long hair "lil girls" to their faces. You'd be eating turf in a heatbeat.

Don't penalize a tackler for grabbing whatever's available. If these "fashionable" players don't want thier pretty ponytails pulled they can cut it, tuck it, or gel it. Just don't cry foul when your hair gets ripped out, instead, go to the Hair Club for Men and get a weave or transplant.

Did I read that right... players are worried about "safety" relating to this issue? Lamest--excuse--ever.

girl fight!

their league their rules. those who have complaints, there is a league further north that will consider giving you a steady paycheck. the rest of the free world has to listen to the person who signs their check, why are players ant diffrent?

May 19, 2008  11:00 AM ET

It's about time! I want to watch football, not somebody's hair following these dudes a few yards behind! Some of these dudes look like a hairball! Imagine the cosequences if a player gets tangled in that mess. They'll need the jaws of life to cut them loose!

May 19, 2008  12:07 PM ET

at least they arent making the players wear a hair net..

May 19, 2008  12:39 PM ET

I would think that they'd want ALL the players to grow their hair long-- you can track their 'roid/drug usage that way...

May 19, 2008  01:25 PM ET

I can't wait to see Troy Palomalo on the sideline with his hair in a bun.

May 19, 2008  02:01 PM ET

Tough it out while your in the NFL making millions of dollars, then you can grow it out when you retire, or even get a weave if you want.

If the hair restriction is based soley on the dress code, then why not move the number down a little and put the name under the number. Now everyone is happy and we can play some football.
