Red-card tackle upsets Beckham

LA Galaxy star David Beckham was at the center of a heated exchange Sunday after FC Dallas defender Adrian Serioux made what Beckham called "a terrible tackle" on the midfielder. Beckham responded to the tackle -- which earned Serioux a red card in the 75th minute of LA's 5-1 win -- by pushing Serioux in front of the Dallas bench. Both benches cleared as Beckham got into a shoving match with Serioux and Arturo Alvarez. "Why did I react like that? Because I could have broken my leg," Beckham said. "Also, the player [Serioux] was saying, 'Welcome, baby, welcome,' after tackling me like that." Beckham rejected the notion raised by some that he's been the target of dirty play in MLS.

that sucks. but becks, that's what u get for coming to play with a bunch of amateurs.

i was at the game and it was a nasty tackle. What I loved was all teh Dallas fans booing Becks for waving by and blowing Serioux a kiss as he was escorted to the locker room. Every time he touched the ball for the remander of the game they booed him but there was sure like 400-500 people waiting by the bus trying to get his autograph :) It was a good game and overall well played and clean until that tackle

i didn't get a good look at the tackle and was at first a bit annoyed by Beckham's outburst. He DOES have anger issues. But after hearing more about it, both the tackle and Serioux's amateurish taunting, I'd say let Beckham at him. Just plain stupid, Serioux. Deserved the thrashing you got as a team, I'd say.

I was there also, and I have to agree with Tidaddy. Along with the atmosphere, it was the largest crowd ever for an FC Dallas game. It drew plenty of first time people, like the guys sitting behind me; and they loved it, said they'll be back. It was a very exciting game, and there could have been even more than the six goals.

Becks also showed his class (not just his temper). His skill, vision, movement are soooo much better than the other players'. While I knew that, it was glaring when seen in person. He also showed his class by applauding the crowd after the game, and then they cheered him again.

At least in this case, the Beckham effect is working.

Becks always reacts that way to borderline or bad tackles. I guess the only reason it's a big issue now is because it's the first time anyone has been sent off for a tackle on him.

hey Kopper where do you live?? That was my first Dallas game that I have been to not to mention my first MLS game period. I am in the Military and I have been stationed in Japan for the last 4 years and I loved the chance to watch the game live.

I think Becks showed real emotion which is what makes it even more fun because it shows that he is a human just like the rest of us, he gets just as pissed when he on the recieving end of a bad tackle like many of us have been but he did show is class after the game with the round of applause for the crowed and signing autographs after the game by the bus (my 11 year old as well as myself both got one)

MadridistAmericano, Becks does indeed react that way, often unnecessarily so. But this tackle was absurdly bad. If Beckham's leg had been planted firmly, no doubt extreme damage would have occurred. Then mix in the taunting, which suggests Serioux knew exactly what he was doing. Just about any player would have reacted as Beckham did. I sure would have.

Soccer players are less inclined to fight because if they get sent off for it they'll miss the rest of the game and at least the next one. You don't just get to suit up for the next week and do the same crap all over again. No, you get sent off for violent play and you WILL miss the next game. It's not worth it in the end.

By the way, I've seen soccer players I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley but they're not trained to fight anyway, right?

I was at the game as well. I had to go home and see the replay of the tackle because where I was sitting it was hard to see. and indeed it was a nasty tackle.
Great game though, great turn-out! Although Becks looked a little frustrated at his team mates from time to time it was great seeing him play live again. It's been a while since the Madrid years.

At the end of the day, Becks is healthy. And, oh yeah, 5-1.

May 19, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Another ridiculous nancy-boy pushing match..... isn't that sweet!

May 19, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Hey Madrid Fan that was a pretty good atmosphere huh??? I thought it was good the fans were so loud even when booing Becks after that tackle. I thought Dallas could have had a few more I was siting right behind the goal where they scored 5 of the 6 goals in the game so it was pretty sweet having all that action right there.

May 19, 2008  09:41 AM ET

oh yea I was disapointed with FSN last night as well watched the highlights after I got home and they did not even show the tackle or say anything about the red card???? Guess ESPN must have huh?

May 19, 2008  10:07 AM ET

The tackle was BANANAS I am telling you he could have gotten hurt...I dont blame Beck for reacting the way he did.....yes, I agree with what someone said " this is what you get for playing with amateur, no class, players"

May 19, 2008  10:11 AM ET

It was a garbage tackle, and he deserved the red card. Beckham should know that he is a marked man... Jesse Marsch, Serioux, Steve Sidwell...I am sure this list could be quite long... he is always getting into a scrum and I would say 90% of the time he has good reason to be defensive.

Galaxy also need to get a player who can protect Beckham. There is no real enforcer on the team.

Tidaddy, I live in the heart of Dallas.
