Michigan's top QB candidate is...

When Steven Threet transferred to Michigan, few thought he had a chance to be the starting quarterback -- or even see the field. Classmate Ryan Mallett, one of Michigan's biggest recruits, was expected to start for years. Threet was an unknown quantity from Adrian who originally signed with Georgia Tech. Almost a year later, Threet could be right. Mallett transferred to Arkansas. And Threet, the 6-foot-5, 228-pound redshirt freshman, is the top candidate to start the Rich Rodriguez era. Threet won't sit on the bench if he can learn Michigan's new spread offense. He's not the prototypical fit for Rodriguez's scheme, but he ran the spread during his final year in high school. Jacobs installed spread elements to take advantage of Threet's arm and athleticism. He also ran option-read plays -- in which the QB reads the defensive end and decides whether to hand off the ball or run with it -- like the ones Rodriguez uses.

Lets just hope this kid can be just effective enough to have a decent season until this system is picked up by the players. This might be the difference between a decent season and a absolute nightmare.

May 19, 2008  08:30 AM ET

A good coach is able to design the system around his players and not the other way around, we will see what RR can do.

I think I speak for UM fans when I say we are not expecting the moon and stars in '08. We need to be patient.

The Truth,

But we are expecting OSU's head on a platter and little brother to cry UNCLE, and for ND to get on their knees and pray for us to be lenient on them. :)
Yeah, wishful thinking but I had to type it!

I'm just hoping that this kid can get through the season. If he is effective then Michigan may not be all that bad this year.

I'm pretty good at geography but the writer is a bit of a dork if he thinks we should know where Adrian is located...

Look as long as the D does it's thing and the rushing attack is on, Michigan will be fine. Maybe not Big 10 Champions, fine, but bowl worthy fine.

ok so our (michigans) qb situation is shakey but our running back is sick,,, i saw footage of this guy and it is fricken sick,, i meann LT fottage

May 19, 2008  01:37 PM ET

Well it does say Detroit Free Press at the bottom of the article so it's safe to say that Adrian is located somewhere in Michigan...

May 19, 2008  01:39 PM ET

Threet could be the difference between 4-8 and 8-4. Michigan needs a good QB or else they will be the 2008 version of the 2007 ND team.

May 19, 2008  03:37 PM ET

Did he say Threet is the starting QB?? .... wow, they really are playing Arena ball in Michigan this year!

May 19, 2008  04:01 PM ET

If he doesn't perform well this year he probably won't be the qb past this season with 2 RR recruits coming in to play qb with his style. But looking at Michigan's schedule, we will definitely be above .500 and make it to a bowl game. Good defense, good running backs, athletic and conditioned players = a bowl game for sure.

Charlie Weis just said the hell with Threet...and then he ate him

I respect big blue, but I am not sold on the good defensive theory. They will be converting to a 3-3-5 hybrid defense that RR runs. That takes a certain type of athlete to be the SS & WS in that scheme. Especially for the three LB listed as well. They are required to do alot of running in space.

My point is this, this was exposed against Applachine State, when they ran a 4-3 defense, which is convential compared to the 3-3-5 defense. I think they should adjust very well up front for the 3 down lineman, but you are asking the SS & WS, which can be treated like a LB in run support and cover like a DB. They might take a pounding. The playing calling and language that they have to get it down to the tee. This is a total different defense then most people know.

I am not sold on RR spread attack, I am about 91% sold. South Florida holds the other 9%. I believe OSU has already taken a trip to South Florida to pick up the things they did down there. SF figured out when West VA was going to run or pass; watching Ol' Pat White touch his towel was a significant key in audiabling at the line of scrimmage, which determine when they ran it. It will be interesting. The Big 10 will discover this real soon, and adjust accordingly. It will be interesting to see if his offense works in the Big 10.

my 95 year old grandfather.... who knows.. but this is michigan .. they will be back and cause ohio state problems... this coming from a buckeye

May 19, 2008  08:40 PM ET

Ghostrider,

Not sure where you get your info let me bring you up to speed. RR and his Def Coordinator Scott Shafer will not be running the 3 3 5 at UM. There might be a situation or two where they will run a 335 formation but it will be rare.

Michigan and OSU compete for the big ten every year. Doesnt matter who the coach is, who the players are or where they came from. If you put on maize and blue or scarlet and grey: that qualifies you as one of the best in the country at your position. The kids play and win the games. I don't think lloyd botched the recruiting that bad to put RR in a landfill.

i think the last time michigan went 4-8 was 1968. lets be real, they win at worst 7 games.
