More NBA dirt from Donaghy

A lawyer for the former NBA referee Tim Donaghy suggested in court papers Monday that games had been influenced by relationships among referees, coaches and players, and that other factors had "prevented games from being played on a level playing field." The league immediately denounced the charges as unfounded. According to documents filed by the lawyer, John Lauro, Donaghy provided law enforcement officials with information about NBA matters outside of the government's original investigation. That included information about the gambling activities of other referees and an instance in which confidential information was suspected of being passed from a referee to a coach. The NBA dismissed all of Lauro's charges without responding to specific statements.

selling all the dirt to keep his butt out of jail. funny thing though there is probally some truth to what he says.

May 20, 2008  07:11 AM ET

There may be something to his claims and there may be nothing.

The idea of the NBA just rejecting it out of hand without giving it a very close look seems wacky though....

Hey, they have a number of refs who are convicted tax cheats. They need to join with law enforcement and investigate these charges being brought by Donaghy

And so it begins... well continues. Stern can only sweep so much under the the rug.

No this guys should be locked up for 5 to 9 years for illegally betting ...that's a federal crime in my book....lock him up let him become big bubba's girlfriend in jail - now that will learn him!

We always knew; just hoped it wasn't too bad, but you have agree... There are make-up calls, refs can influence the game flow(physical or not) and lastly the refs can and do retalilate against teams, owners, and players.

I'm not saying the games are fixed, I'm just saying they are trying to sell the NBA product.

as a ref for highschool, middle school and younger kids I can tell you, you have good days, and bad days like everyone else. you just try and call the same thing on both ends of the court. you can not be held accountable for what others do to influence the game. it is the ultimate in integrety.

May 20, 2008  08:57 AM ET

I doubt Donaghy was the only ref doing something like this. He's just the 1st to get caught..

May 20, 2008  09:06 AM ET

i agree look at Crawford and what he pulled. it was not gambeling but the job caused him to think he was untouchable. the same thing happen with Donaghy

May 20, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Typical...just trying to throw others under the bus to try and get off by "helping" the authorities. Throw the book at the dirtbag...he deserves it.

About RIVERS, LAKES, CHAMPIONS, and FAKES.
Let me tell you the story of the man called "Rivers", who runs a small basketball team in Boston. Those of you familiar with Beantown know that there is no real river there, only a muddy stream called the "Charles". In the meantime, a true river, the Rio Grande, runs along the Southern border of Texas, where a true championship caliber team resides in the town of San Antonio.
Then there is the team named after the "Lakes", residing in the superficial town of Los Angeles. Here again, there are no real lakes with fresh water, just the salt-water of the ocean. Instead, the real lake, Lake Michigan, is bordered by its namesake, where the city of Detroit hosts another true basketball team.
So, as we head into the Conference Finals, ladies and gentlemen, remember which teams really live near the river and lakes, and which other teams are just chopped liver and fakes.

May 20, 2008  10:42 AM ET

I love where this is headed! .... David Stern must be knocking back the Mogan David Concord Grape every night worrying about what might come out next.... My one question.... why isn't this thread playing as big as the stupid Spy Gate thing? This is 100X worse than Spy Gate and Pete Rose combined!!!

May 20, 2008  11:18 AM ET

If any of this is true, this is a way bigger deal than MLB steroids and Spygate put together.
