Pedro hints at early retirement

After facing minor leaguers in game competition Monday, Pedro Martinez was equal parts enthusiasm and concern in an extended interview. He was zealous about a proposed start for the club that could come before the end of the month. He was distressed about his ailing father and said a desire to be there for his family might bring him to an early retirement - possibly even after this season.

He should retire. He is the Met's main problem. He has done good, but he is injured limp now and cannot perform properly. Hang it up Holmes and go fishin.

He's not already retired?

Early? Pedro should have retired 3 years ago. Look, I love the little guy and I do agree that he's one of the best pitchers EVER because he dominated an era where the players were juicing. I still get chills over how he struck out the side in that All-Star game. Had he decided to be an average pitcher and not a dominant one, he'd probably still be pitching effectively, but he wanted to DOMINATE and now his body is paying for it. Face it, the BoSox were right not to cave in to his demands, I was one of those who thought they were wrong, but I'll take my lumps. While the Sox have won two rings Pedro is on the DL again and the Mets aren't looking too smart for picking him up.

He is an idiot which luckily went to the right side of new york. Better than the memory of striking out the side in the all star game has to be throwing 80 year old Don Zimmer to the ground. Another classy Red Sox man.

Do you remember that Don Zimmer, that poor old 80 year old man, came running out of the dugout AT Pedro? Now while I don't condone his actions, please lets not make Zimmer out to be some victim here. You sound like a jealous Red Sox hater. This isn't about whether Pedro is classy or not, it's about whether he should retire, which I believe he should. If you're going to live in the past how about telling the whole story?

If memory serves me right, Pedro was standing and watching the fight and Don Zimmer went after Pedro. Admitteldy, Pedro is a prima dona and will never be confused as a class act, but he could have done a lot worse than push the crazy old fart to the ground.

Besides when it comes to classy players, the Red Sox definitely can't compete with the Yankees. Steve Howe, Darrell Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Billty Martin, Mickey Mantle. Now those were some class guys. How many rehab stints between them?? Now that's class!

I know, here comes the typical Yankee fan response. 26 World Championships. That's old news pal, what have you done lately?

May 20, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Oh yea. This is just Pedro's way of getting another contract. He played the same game when he got the Sox to pick up the option on his last deal.
If the mets (or anyone else) throws money at him, he'll resign in a heartbeat.

May 20, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Hey SoxFan, I wonder how MC will feel when Pedro is pitching for the Yanks next year, they love giving big contracts for "what have you done for me lately" type talent.

Thing is, I'm no Red Sox fan nor Yankee hater, I love the games between the two because it's the best baseball on the planet as far as I'm concerned. I just don't get how Pedro hinting at retirement became how classless the Red Sox are.

For any team to throw big money at Pedro at this point would be sheer stupidity. You'll be lucky to get 15 starts a season out of this guy. He sold his body out to be dominant and I can respect that, but it's over.

May 20, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Granted both are tlaented but two players I hope to never see in pinstripes are Pedro or Manny. Nothing makes for better conversation than the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. I do not like Boston but I do respect their talent a.k.a. Jon Lester. The Yankees have lived on has beens which worked when they had better chemistry. They have changed that philosophy this year and hopefully they will be patient and let it work. Last thing......START JOBA!!!!!

This lil chicken fighter is DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He should have retired three years ago.....washed-up, sucks, injury-prone.

I think your recollection is a little faulty, while Zim's "attack" on Pedro was ill considered, it is actually understandable. Zim has a plate in his head from getting hit by a pitch. Pedro has always been notorious for such tactics, and that was the underlying issue to the fracas.
And Puhlease don't bother with the "Class" stuff. That is just sour grapes by a bunch of fans that had been on the outside looking in for too long.
If anything, the Yanks had more class for sticking by their players and giving them second third and fourth chances at a life. If there is fault there, it is the frailty of humanity and the evil that is the diseaease of addiction. Classless would be kicking people whjen they are down and ridiculing those who try to help them. If nothing else the Boss was loyal to his players.

Drinking game: For every T & R story posted about Pedro Martinez, take a swig every time some Yankees fan posts some crybaby rant about the ancient Don Zimmer incident.

May 20, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I guess I need to hold up a bit and wait for everyone then?

May 20, 2008  11:12 AM ET

It is always mature to refer to a head injury as irrelevent crybaby stuff and to support someone who has issues with intentionally throwing at people. Yeah that will work, but only in Boston.

May 20, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Actually, it's a bit early in the day for the rest of us, Truth. Better idea: taking bets on how many posts till the first such crybaby rant.....?

Over/under is somewhere between 5 & 10.

to support someone who has issues with intentionally throwing at people. Yeah that will work, but only in Boston.

Actually, it worked everywhere throughout the history of baseball, at least until recent years, when guys started getting paid way too much....

Brad:

I think we have some live ones

May 20, 2008  11:25 AM ET

It is what it is Brad, and that is still who Pedro was and is. Hell of an arm that is for sure, but he is just one step above Benitez as a head hunter.
