Olson going down swinging

If the Arizona program is spiraling, Lute Olson is going down swinging. His family is helping him survive his public and ugly divorce, he said. Recruit Emmanuel Negedu's recent request to be released from his letter of intent "won't affect our program at all," he added. Olson, who turns 74 in September, said last season's leave of absence for personal reasons "recharged my battery" and that he plans to coach another five or six years. His contract runs through 2011. If all goes well, Olson will start an impressive lineup next season that includes forwards Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill, guard Nic Wise and point guard Brandon Jennings, widely regarded as the No. 1 high school recruit in the country. That's a best-case scenario. The worst-case scenario has Budinger going to the NBA - he's expected to make his decision in the next few weeks - Wise transferring and Jennings not qualifying. Jennings, a 6-foot-2 guard who is attending Virginia's Oak Hill Academy, still needs to reach a qualifying score on his college entrance exam and may not know until midsummer. Olson is confident Wise will return.

Seriously, is he the first person in America to get divorced?
What divorce isn't 'ugly'?

And how is the rogram 'sputtering' ?
their current roster is at WORST the 3rd best team in the pac ten

May 20, 2008  12:23 PM ET

It's sputtering because they haven't been able to meet expectations with the high level of talen they have. Granted last year was pretty much a write-off but it was sputtering before that.

We'll see how it goes this year. Hopefully the Pac-10 will be tops in the nation again, but the Big East is looking pretty mean

Olson should have retired 5 years ago- Arizona has done basically nothing with top notch talent since then. That speaks to a coaching staff that has lost the 'it' factor. Some young blood would be good for them- maybe WKU's coach.

But Bruins......
look at Duke- they get 2-3 McD's every year....& they have not been to a final four in several years- are they 'sputtering' ?
I HATE duke...but they are one of he top programs in the country- even without winning

The big story here is Jennings not qualifying. If he doesn't qualify, Arizona is screwed.

May 20, 2008  07:53 PM ET

Says alot that he knows the program is having problems but will take it down with him!

I really wonder about this guy.

May 20, 2008  09:18 PM ET

The dude should give it up and enjoy his senior years sucking a Mai-Thai w/ his Thai, lol, but seriously....he'll get fired before he makes his goal of 6 more years.

May 21, 2008  09:35 AM ET

"3rd best team in the Pac-10" Which on the whole is like saying we are the 3rd best team in the Mountain West.

Having said that...Olsen clearly thinks pretty highly of himself with his statement of the kid leaving "wont affect the program at all". I bet when he was recruiting the kid his tone was different. Shame on the Univ of Arizona for continuing to employ this snakeoil salesman!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jennings should qualify and if Budinger comes back (a big IF), we will be solid. If not, good luck making the tournament this year. The committee won't be likely to throw another bone strictly due to strength of schedule.

scroungy: You could replace Pearl with Olson and UTK for Arizona too-

Olson(Pearl) should have retired 5 years ago- Arizona(UK) has done basically nothing with top notch talent since then. That speaks to a coaching staff that has lost the 'it' factor.

Pearl: $EC tourney championships, 0 and he has never advance past the sweet 16 with all that talent. Guess he doesn't have that "it" factor.. Olson has a NC, UTK can't even win their conference tournament, enough said.

The Truth nailed it! So now these kids don't matter to the program, wish I had been a fly on the wall during those recruiting visists!

I can't believe the imbeciles that post on here. Lute is a Hall of Fame coach and he is as classy and honorable as they come. Go join the circus.

Olson needs to leave. He hasn't been worth much since they won it all. He has too big of an ego to see that he is the one that has brought that program down. They also should fire Livengood, worthless. What the UA did to Kevin O was crap and I hope he makes them pay dearly. I don't care for his coaching that much, but he came in at a very bad time and did one heck of a job and was given a deal for "future coach", but Olson's ego came into play when he came back and they, (Olson/UA) in my opinion railroaded Kevin. No CLASS on their part. As for Olson's big D., I could care less. The man is making more money than he is or every has been worth and I think he has a problem with a woman who has more money than he does and is smarter. From what the papers and all have said, she wanted to make it work and he didn't. I don't blame the ball players for wanted to leave. I don't see him being trusting
