Is Montgomerie finished?
Posted: Tuesday May 20, 2008 09:25AM ET
Colin Montgomerie finished? It is a painful but valid question as the eight-time Order of Merit winner revisits the scene of some of his greatest triumphs this week. Montgomerie returns to Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship ranked No. 90 in the world -- his lowest position for 18 years. The honeyed days when he won the European Tour's flagship event for three successive years between 1998 and 2000 belong to a different era. At 44 and a millionaire many times over, Montgomerie, a successful course designer, does not need the financial rewards of competing among the elite. Recently married for the second time, he does not need life on the Tour for companionship either. At this stage of his sporting life and with these sorts of distractions, it would be easy for him to rest on his laurels. But he is seemingly determined to fight the dying of the light.

Finished? Did he ever get started?

Did he ever get started? Stick to football. Your statement smacks of ignorance. Riddle me this: Name another person that has one the Order of Merit eight times? You can not. Between 1993-1999, he won the Order of Merit. Since he joined the tour in 1988, he has finished no worse that 52nd of the list, and has won more than any other European player. And he remains No. 1 on the all time earnings list in Europe.
I define that as "getting started."

I define that as a good Euro career.... which is kind of like saying that Crash Davis had a great minor league baseball career..... who the hell cares about that??

Report Offensive CommentMonty has a similar personality as Nick Faldo had playing. Difference is Nick Faldo is fun to listen to now. Both can play the game. Monty just can't do it in the States.

Report Offensive CommentGuilty as charged, but what has he done over here? I don't watch European golf. I don't live in Europe.

I'd say the europeans might?
I know this may be tough to swallow, but there is a whole big world outside of the USA

Monty's a helluva golfer and misunderstood over here.

News flash: Just because Monty isn't on SportsCenter every 10 seconds with an uninteresting sound bite doesn't mean he "never got started". Did you guys read the story, he's a successful course designer and a millionare many times over. I'd define that as getting started.
Motto for the day: Just because it didn't happen in the U.S. doesn't mean it didn't happen, ask David Hasselhoff

Also, Faldo won some Majors..... so props to Faldo.... Monty won squat over here.... he was a total fecking failure.... no points for the fat man with the bad disposition and moobs....

Report Offensive CommentThe Europeans dominate the Ryder Cup, can't argue with that. Nobody really dominates the regular tour anymore except Tiger. When he's not playing the tourney is up for grabs. As far as Monty, great player that never seems to have had the mental toughness to win on U.S. soil. Hard to figure that out. Of course, some of his statements over the years haven't exactly won him a lot of fans in the U.S. so you can hardly blame us for taking a potshot now and again.
Jakester | 05/21/08, 01:19 PM
Report Offensive CommentAgreed Jakester.
But the body of work that has defined his career says he's a pretty damn good golfer. Winning in the US or not.
