Barkley vows to stop gambling

Charles Barkley said Monday that he had paid the $400,000 he owed the Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas since October and vowed to stop gambling. "Just because I can afford to lose money don't mean I should do it," Barkley, a TNT analyst, said during an interview on the cable network before Game 7 of the Spurs-Hornets series. Soon after Barkley made his remarks, press officers for the Clark County district attorney in Nevada and the casino could not verify that he had paid the debt or, possibly, a 10 percent penalty. Dan Kulin, a spokesman for the district attorney's office, said, "We have no contact and received no money from Mr. Barkley." But he added, "At this point, Mr. Barkley could pay us or the hotel." A spokeswoman for the Wynn Resorts, who declined to give her name, said, "I don't know for certain if Barkley had paid."

The thing I really don't get in this story is the Clark County District Attorney's Office working hard as the debt collection department for the Las Vegas casinos...

If someone goes into Vegas, rings up some markers then stiffs the people running the most lucrative fleece job on the planet, GREAT! Why is the American taxpayer funding a private debt collection service for the casinos? Sure, it sounds like they are getting a taste of it, but we the people can just pass a law that says all the debts are civil, the casinos need to collect their own mistakes and we STILL get a 10% surcharge..... for doing nothing!

Our cops got WAY more important matters than bill collecting for the casinos to do.....

maybe he needs to borrow Giambi's golden thong to get out of a slump on the tables. Earnie can wear a full lenght gown and Kenny can go dressed up like Rick James.

What's the over/under on Barkley not gambling?

May 20, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Well the Wynn just lost many customers. Regardless of the circumstances you should never put a client's business out there like that. It's not like the guy couldn't pay. Plenty of other multi-millionaire players will most likely stay away from the Wynn now. That's bad business.

And this fool thinks he possesses the discipline, common sense, character and fiscal responsibility to be governor of Alabama?

I think not!

Customer like this the Wynn doesn't need!

You sound both foolish and ignorant of the law.

The Wynn merely took legal action to secure payment on markers Barkley signed and repeatedly failed to pay. Once they did that it became public record. News reporters put Barkley's "business out there".

That he "could pay" is irrelevent; the fact is he'd DIDN'T pay. I CAN pay my mortagage; if I don't pay it the bank has every right to sue me.

"Other mulit-millionaires" pay their bills and could care less about Barkley's gambling trials and tribulations. They will not make their casino or resort choices based on Barkley's stupid behavior and subsequent problems. As if you know any - let alone "plenty" - multi-millionaires or have any idea what their thinking is.

You grovelling, boot-licking, butt-kissing athlete worshippers are forever serving up all kinds of asinine excuses for the irresponsible behavior of your heroes.

Barkley may look like Buddha, but he's no diety. I suggest you find someone/something else to worship.

May 20, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Whatever man.... Barkley is no role model nor hero, nor does he want to be! He is who he is and don't put on his representative for the world like everyone else on TV. U da man Bark! Do you! Plus that TNT broadcast won't be **** without Barkley!

May 20, 2008  10:05 AM ET

If the could go to the press to make the world aware that Barkley owed the money, then they should be just as dogmatic about acknowledging that it had been paid. Someone paid a $400,000 tab, and noone knows about it? Puleeze

About RIVERS, LAKES, CHAMPIONS, and FAKES.
Let me tell you the story of the man called "Rivers", who runs a small basketball team in Boston. Those of you familiar with Beantown know that there is no real river there, only a muddy stream called the "Charles". In the meantime, a true river, the Rio Grande, runs along the Southern border of Texas, where a true championship caliber team resides in the town of San Antonio.
Then there is the team named after the "Lakes", residing in the superficial town of Los Angeles. Here again, there are no real lakes with fresh water, just the salt-water of the ocean. Instead, the real lake, Lake Michigan, is bordered by its namesake, where the city of Detroit hosts another true basketball team.
So, as we head into the Conference Finals, ladies and gentlemen, remember which teams really live near the river and lakes, and which other teams are just chopped liver and fakes.

Wow! The NBA doesn't take gambling likely, especially with that Ref guy getting caught. Remember back when Tim Hardaway lost his announcing job for saying that he hates "gay" NBA players and would never play with them? Barkley couldn't keep his mouth wired on this one.

Hello

I hope everyone is having a SPURRIFIC MORNING!!!!!
