Is Car of Tomorrow to blame?
Posted: Tuesday May 20, 2008 09:19AM ET
Remember when NASCAR said the car of tomorrow would help promote side-by-side racing? The car wouldn't be so aerodynamically sensitive, the bigwigs in Daytona Beach said, so it would be easier for drivers to race next to each other, especially in the intermediate tracks. Has anyone seen any good side-by-side racing lately? It's funny: Though the competition is better than ever, the racing is not. There is clearly more depth in the Sprint Cup Series than there ever was. And if you doubt that, simply watch some ESPN Classic races when there were five or six cars on the lead lap, and the 10th-place finisher was six laps down. Racing wasn't necessarily better back in the "good ol' days," even though there were some great races. But there is no disputing that there are more good teams right now than there ever were. So why isn't the racing itself any better? I say blame the new car. It didn't accomplish what it was supposed to. Races on 1.5-mile tracks this year have been snoozers, unless your name is Carl Edwards.

NASCAR created this mess with their crappy version of a drifter, now they need to fix it. I have said this before, these things look like some kid decided to hang a JC Whitney "fin" on the deck and bolt on a piece of plywood up front. You want to see real "stock cars" check ARCA or any Saturday nite track. NASCAR -- Pleaae get a grip!!

Report Offensive Commentif you snooze you lose.............carl has not been snoozing...................the only saving grace of the cot is when a race is over 41 of the 43 starters are still running....................many more cars finish every race...................i dont know if that is good or bad........i have mixed emotions on that.................what are your opinions on that

Report Offensive Commentpersonally i dont care how many cars are still running at the end of the race, as usually only the top 5 would be battling for a win anyway (except for the obvious tracks).. the others are just riding around

Report Offensive CommentThis article is right on! While this car may be safer, the racing isn't better. Plus, that car is sooooo ugly.

Report Offensive CommentI have watched an old classic race ot two and sometimes cars were laps down and the winner was laps ahead of the field. The mysterious cautions bringing restarts actually help the competition, just hate it when it determines a winner.

Report Offensive Commentjackman; I presume you are talking about the Nascar No See Um. That strange caution flag that appears when Gordon or Dale Jr. or another fair haired boy is off the pace. Debris on the track is the usual call but often it is a No See Um.

Report Offensive CommentThe false dichotomy is that "in the good old days there were only four or five cars on the lead lap at the end," ignoring that 50 lead changes was the norm and going on the premise that lead changes have to disappear for there to be 30 or so cars on the lead lap. The other part is that when it is said "you have 30 cars on the lead lap" the assumption made is that they're all fighting for the win; the fact is only at the restrictor plate tracks is that even remotely the case.
The Scenedaily clip also ignores that in the last five seasons only 11 teams have won races, versus 14 teams (with an aggregate of 26 different drivers) that won races in 2001-2 and 18 different teams winning races in the 1988-90 period. In that area the competition is manifestly NOT better or deeper than it used to be.
The COT manifestly is to blame for the weakness of the racing right now, in that it not only failed to live up to its promises it has exacerbated the aeropush and inability to pass people complained about before, and all the while a rules package that has proven to increase passing - a 7.5-inch rear spoiler and a bolt-on air-displacement roof wicker on the old body with long nose, flush airdam, and chopped roofline - remains is use only in the BGN series on their plate tracks.

Well said STP...

Report Offensive CommentTheres a huge assumption in the leadin byline....that the COT would creat better and more side by side racing. The part that was left out is that because of the aero changes, it would require more "DRIVER TALENT" to make the assumption become reality. Since these guys are still trying to figure the COT out (like they had the previous cars) I believe they need more time to make their dreams come true. The only thing I've seen thus far is that drivers are safer and the Toyotas are allowed a greater horsepower output. In my humble opinion, theres some learnin left to be done.
