Is Randolph playing the race card?

Willie Randolph finds himself in the spotlight these days, with his job status in question and his demeanor in the dugout under a microscope. Despite the reprieve provided by two weekend victories against the Yankees, that spotlight followed Randolph to Atlanta on Tuesday, where he was asked to clarify remarks that appeared Monday in a column by Ian O'Connor in The Record of Hackensack, N.J. In those remarks, Randolph questioned the way he was portrayed during broadcasts on the Mets' television network and wondered whether he was held to a different standard than some of his white counterparts. Although Randolph did not say anything particularly inflammatory in O'Connor's column and did not suggest that the Mets' organization was not supporting him, the fact that he brought up the issue of race and challenged the Mets' TV outlet created a new distraction for a club that has had a bunch of them lately.

Hahaha, Mets are imploding

He's looking for job security now, and of course there's no better way to go about it but to play the race card. This crap gets old. I hope his ass gets fired!!!!!!!!!!

how about a 100 million dollar+ payroll and squat to show for it. if you can coach it does not matter what color you are. white guys get fired real fast in case you haven't noticed. if anything black coaches get more slack because of owners fear of racial charges.. shut up and coach , if you can.(i think you will be a good 3rd base coach for the yankees)

Is there any reason at all in professional sports these days to play the race card? Minorities have excelled on the field, and in field and front office management. The majority of professional sports team owners are very smart people. They know how to make a buck. I do not believe for one minute that most of them would care about the race of their athletes or managers as long as they were doing a competent job to help to continue to add to the owners bank accounts. It really is time to move on from this kind of stuff. That being said, these comments are coming from a middle class white guy who has never experienced racism. However, i have gotten out of bed every day to go to work for the last 30 years, and will not even come close in my life time to making the kind of money that Willie will make this year alone. Count your blessings.

Look Willie, as a black man I'd love to back you on this, but losing a 7-game lead with 17 games to play to my hometown Phillies is why you're portrayed "a certain way" in the media, nothing else. Before your collapse last year, you were hailed as some type of calming genius by the NY Media, so you can't go race on this my friend. New Yorkers are much like my hometown Philadelphia fans, you could be PURPLE as long as you produce, we don't care. Last year this time Plaxico Burress (BLACK) was a punk and Eli Manning (WHITE) was a dumb bumpkin, what are they now?

Anyone to suggest that racism doesn't exist is a moron, but there is absolutely no racism in this case. Cities like New York and Philly expect results and we don't get them we get critical, if you don't like it Willie, go to Kansas City where they don't give two chits.

Is it now racsist to portray an idiot manager as an idiot manager?

May 21, 2008  08:55 AM ET

"Minorities have excelled on the field, and in field and front office management."

That's not entirely true. It took a while for black coaches to make an impact in the NFL ranks, and they are still grossly under represented at the college level. Proportional to their representation as players, blacks don't get equal representation in front offices/ownership positions. However, I will agree with what everyone says about Randolph. He just isn't a good coach. Look at how someone like Tony Dungy has been represented in the media. If you get the job done and don't oversee a historic collapse, the media and baseball community will treat you fairly. Race is not involved in his tarring and feathering; bad coaching is.

I think Willie is the right guy for the Mets...not his fault the team had a complete collapse at the end of last season. But I for one feel no empathy cause I can't stand NY teams, lol.

In a word.......

HERE COME DA JUDGE!!!!!!!!!!!

It's hard to give up those crutches.

If a manager isnt judged on whether he wins or not, what should he be judged on? Willie implies Joe Torre got a better deal from the media for his laidback personality. A small difference--Torre got slack because he produced the post-season hardware. When that stopped, the slack dissappeared. It's the same for you Willie--stop choking down the stretch and you won't get criticized.

By the way, maybe it's not always the manager's fault when a team collapses, but if you are a genius when they win you are accountable for when they lose. That is the only yardstick.

AWWWWW SWANNNYYYYYYYYY OHHH SWANNY

May 21, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I'll give the Mets this.... they find new and creative ways to tank every year.... now if only my Braves can find a way to take advantage of this..... I sure hope the Marlins aren't the recipient of the Phillies, Mets and Braves inability to play better than .500 ball.

May 21, 2008  09:45 AM ET

He wisely pulled back from those comments yesterday, saying race has nothing to do with it.

But it's disturbing to see someone in his position throw that out there to try to scare journalists away from asking perfectly fair questions, like "why aren't you winning?" To suggest that Isaiah was somehow the victim of racism was beyond lunacy...he held onto his job FAR longer than he deserved.

As a NYer, I hate to see anyone come to work in a sports town like this, where they know they're getting above-average pay, and then complain about the scrutiny. It comes with the territory, and crying "racism" when you get criticized not only makes it harder for you, it makes it harder for the next team to hire a black manager. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

"Holy mackerel!"

You're losing, Willie. If you were a WASP and losing everyone would be embracing you. Right...
