NFL considers adding 17th game

Commissioner Roger Goodell and the owners continue to discuss the possibility of adding a 17th regular season game and perhaps shortening the preseason by a game. Goodell said the possibility is "on the table," but the league is not yet ready to present a proposal to the players' union, which would have to approve such a change. "We are not satisfied with the quality of the preseason right now," Goodell said. "We'd like to improve on that." Goodell said that the additional home game could alternate annually by conference, meaning AFC teams could get nine home games each one season and NFC clubs could get nine apiece the next. .

I'm all for it! I'm not satisfied with the quality of preseason games either! Adding another meaningful game also lessens the chances for injury in an insignificant game.

The preseason is to long. I am all for adding another regular season game to the schedule...the NFL season goes by to quick anyway.

won't happen

I like an even number of regular season games.
Lets go with 18

May 21, 2008  08:40 AM ET

I hope it does....love to see the Pats for another week...

May 21, 2008  08:47 AM ET

I think 16 is a good number and they should leave it alone.

May 21, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Seventeen games means they can each play a "home" game in Europe, Canada, and Mexico and not tick off the home fans.

May 21, 2008  08:59 AM ET

The 17th game doesn't have anything to do with the preseason. Rather, it has to do with the league's plan to have each team eventually plan one overseas game per season. So you're not gonna get another "home" game per se.

...That being said, I say shorten the preseason from four games to two, and add the 17th game (whether its played in NFL stadiums or overseas)!

May 21, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Why we're at it why don't we just make it like baseball, hockey or basketball and have them play 3, 4 or 5 times a week for 6 months.

May 21, 2008  09:21 AM ET

A football player's body can't afford to play that many times a week for that long. One game a week is plenty and one more meaningful regular season game would be well worth it.

May 21, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Add the 17th game and cut 2 preseason games. They are worthless.

May 21, 2008  09:28 AM ET

I like that idea M-A-R-S

Shorten the Pre-season by 2 games, and then expand regular season by 1.

May 21, 2008  09:30 AM ET

agree w/ metrosouth... cut the preseason games by 2+

May 21, 2008  09:31 AM ET

I say cut the preseason games down to 2, and have an 18-game regular season. The more meaningful NFL games, the better. It would also prevent teams from playing garbage conferences for their cross-conference games each year and bloating records, making the NFL more competitive.

I love NFL football but if you add another game what happens to all the single season records that will be broken? Do you put a * asterik by them all? I hate preseason just as much as everyone else but I don't think we need another regular season game. I think the NFL and owners just want to make more money!!!

May 21, 2008  09:33 AM ET

I think that is a good idea that a 17th game is added. The preseson meenslittle.

May 21, 2008  09:39 AM ET

I believe with modern medicine and nutrition combined with the care these players get, playing 17 games in 2009 takes no more of a toll on the body then playing 16 games in 1989. So the extra toll on the body argument doesn't wash for me much.

The players will definitely ask for more money, so perhaps the owner's timing on this with everything that is going on was not the best.

Of course it's about the money.... and this is hardly new.... the NFL was 12 games in the 60s, went to 14 (I think) in the late 60s or early 70s and then to 16.... so trying to squeeze in extra games & dealing with the "records" issue is hardly a groundbreaking issue.....

as opposed to when NFL was a fourteen game season? or a twelve game season? OJ's 2k yard season is just that much more impressive due to a fourteen game season back then...
