Changes for Flyers defense
Posted: Wednesday May 21, 2008 06:09AM ET
Veteran defensemen Derian Hatcher and Jason Smith stunned Flyers GM Paul Holmgren with their willingness to play through pain, to put the team ahead of their own health, during the playoffs. But they are also older, slower, and more prone to injury than ever. Smith is likely to leave as a free agent. Hatcher, if he doesn't retire, would be a tough guy to say goodbye to. But the future of the Flyers' defensive corps belongs to Braydon Coburn, Kimmo Timonen, Ryan Parent and Randy Jones. If Holmgren can add a marquee player such as free-agent-to-be Brian Campbell, all the better.

Good luck to them.

Report Offensive CommentWait a second, add a marquee player? What about trying to find the money to keep Carter?
Smith can go back to Edmonton and Parent can fill one spot. Hatcher would have to be a buyout, no? Is it worth it to buy him out and pay a replacement with the little bit you save? Would the replacement be any better?

Report Offensive CommentWhat an informative article... stating that Hatcher and Smith are done and the future lies with Coburn and Timmonen. Great insight. And the clincher was the effort to try to sign a stud like Bryan Campbell.... who is this hockey insider?
I am enlightenened.

Report Offensive CommentExactly Sportsfan> Where are they supposed to get money to make a pitch to Campbell?
Baun-ded | 05/21/08, 09:55 AM
Report Offensive CommentI think the better question, Bauner, is why would Brian Campbell go to Philly? I know that team is decent, but I think that this year was a bit of a fluke. They got hot in the playoffs. Campbell will re-sign with San Jose. That's a good team with a chance to be great. Why would he go anywhere else?

Report Offensive CommentHatcher proved this year he is an immobile lummox.
Even a telephone pole hurts if you run in to it but avoiding the pole is as easy as pie.
If he isn't playing ugly he is of no use. And he doesn't play ugly anymore. His time has past.
Jason Smith still has a season or so left in his tank. But I wouldn't pay to keep him.

Report Offensive CommentIf the Flyers can trade Derian Hatcher....maybe to a team looking to get rid of money after next season....they should do it....Hatcher is not worth the money Clarke paid him per season....
Rathje has to retire.....
Carter has to be re-signed....Umberger, I'm a little iffy on....I can't see him getting a significant raise for 12 in-season goals and one good playoff round....Jones could get a little raise....
The Flyers have to trim the fat....Brian Campbell would be a good fit on this team....Let Briere and Biron talk to him about coming to Philly....maybe they can talk him into it....
Smith is going to Jersey who needs a veteran Dman with some push....so he'll be gone....
Prospal is gone....Thoresen is probably gone....Downie could stay in the minors....Trade Dennis Gauthier.....save some money somewhere....and hope the cap goes up 3-4 million dollars next season.

Report Offensive CommentLook, I'm not saying that the Flyers are bad, I'm just saying that they won't be in the Conference Finals next year. Not with a team like Washington on the rise. And talk about the Avs all you want. I'm not expecting much next year. But again, "Kinda tough when your players are constantly getting hurt". You said it yourself. I'll be the first to admit that I don't watch the Flyers nearly as much as anyone else because I'm in the West. I see enough of them on Versus though, because all they show is Pens/Rangers and Pens/Flyers (do the Pens play anyone else?). Washington will beat them next year as long as Huet stays, and do you really think that Martin Biron will be as good next year as he was this year? You're in for a disappointment. Plus, playing in Philly, we know they're cursed. That trumps everything.

Report Offensive CommentBoring Bruins? I'll take the Boring Bruins any day over the "exciting Leafs".LOL. Boston's future is bright there Baun-ded. This i have no doubt. They'll be in the play-offs for years to come with our very promising youth. They'll not only make the play-offs for years to come,i expect them to finally make some noise in the play-offs to boot. Thats no joke.

I agree yet again with you bostongm...as Gocan would say, "Mark this day in your calender."
I have no doubt about the Bruins getting the "boot" too.
----------------------
TunaTime> I actually really like the Hawks...I won't tell you why as bostongm is still lurking....(something he specializes in btw) anyways...Campbell will most likely stay right where he is...Unless of course the Leafs can trade McCabe for him...hahahahaha- Yeah...of course I know he's a free agent everyone.

Report Offensive CommentHatcher shouldn't be too hard to replace...you can get those orange traffic cones at lots of places. Hell, you don't even need to paint it a different color. He could wear an orange vest and take tickets at the gates, he's already got that 'reach and look behind you' move perfected.
