H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, one of stock-car racing's great showmen, will take his final bows as president of Lowe's Motor Speedway this weekend. The Observer has learned that Wheeler is retiring from his post at the track, where he has served as almost equal parts businessman and ringmaster since 1975.

AWW..Humpy is leaving! That is too sad! I'm going to miss him. He is a great man and very funny. Who ever tries to fill his shoes will have a hard row to hoe! Hope he enjoys his retirement. Hopefully we'll still see him around the track though.

Have no fear - he'll be around like a second coat of paint

Can see him retiring but cannot see him walking completely away. He will be involved at some level. Consultant to the new guy or something like that.

His nickname is based on a childhood incident and has nothing to do with "h u m p i ng"

Yes Sir; If you believe that story about the camel on a cigarette package and the hump,I have a little piece of land down here in Florida you might be interested in.If interested come see it now before we get into rainy season.

There will never be another Humpy, or grumpy or sleepy etc
No doubt there will be nepotism considered when filling this position.

I always figured that it would be better to be the "Humper" than the "Humpy".

Sirius Nascar Radio is portraying Humpy as a man that always had the fans best interest in mind. I beg to differ. Humpy was a great promotor and had innovative ideas in promoting races. The only time he really cared about the fans was when they were paying for parking on Speedway property or milking a few more dollars out of them.

Humpy was good, but he went way too far in showmanship and the sport needs to dump show-off promoting and get back to getting and promoting great racing.
