Vick's bonus forced owners' hand
Roger Goodell said expenses brought on by the current economy, stadium and operating costs and teams' inability to recoup bonus money from suspended players were among the reasons to opt out of the deal. The Falcons' inability to recover any more than $3 million of the nearly $20 million in bonus money they sought from suspended/imprisoned quarterback Michael Vick was cited as a drawback by owners. "That's money that could go to players who are playing," Goodell said.

The reason the Falcons have not gotten back the sighning bonus money from Michael Vick is because the Players union fought and won. That why Vick is still under contract with the Falcons, instead of being cut or released because the Falcons want to get some of that money back.

The falcons need to stop crying. They know darn well they don't need that money back, case and point is the 72 million deal they just did with Ryan. Blank, just suck it up and drive on... That man filled more seats in his time with the Falcons than anybody every will... He earned that money...

How is that? Because he is a subpar QB that can run fast? He was an innacurate QB, at best. The only thing this clown ever earned is his prison stint

They could not get the money back because of the contract structure. They tried to play the salary cap & got played instead.

The NFLPA should never agree to any deal that gives back bonus money that has already been earned and the owners have already made a return on that investment.

He earned that money because he put butts in the seats and sold apparel which made money for Blank and the NFL. Check the attendance number before during and after. Is the league willing to give any that back to the fans?

I think Vick is in some way responsible for the opt out because he was a waste of money and the owners want some protection from that.I know he sold t-shirts and most of black atlanta had to have their jerseys and other # 7 gear, but you don't need a black QB in a black city to make $$,you need to WIN.(see New Orleans, who is making the $$,Aaron Brooks or Brees?)Let's not forget the impact Ryan Leaf had in '98.I believe you will see rookie cap tied into the next deal for sure.Giving Ryan that much money without taking a snap is ludicrous and the reason Atlanta has never, and will never, win a ring.Ryan is making Big Ben money for throwing 8 more INT.'s in fewer games against the ACC!Maybe they know something about QB's the rest of us don't

This is the problem. Did the Atl Falcons fans actually like the team and root for them, or where they simply there to see 1 player? As you put it Vick is the sole reason people were Falcons fans. Thats a weak fan base.

Too many people expect a quarterback to only have a good arm. Look at what the Falcons were before Vick, and look at what they did with Vick. They instantly had a chance to win every game when Vick became QB. Just because he was an excellent runner and a mediocre arm (he at least had a quick release and a strong arm) doesnt mean he wasnt a good QB. Look at what they had around him for receivers??? Dez White? Ashley Lelie? You gotta be kidding me. ANY other QB besides the Tom Brady's and Peyton Mannings would have done far worse than Vick in Atlanta. Too many of you are stuck on the standard of a QB has to ONLY have an excellent arm. I'd easily want Vick over at least 25 of the starting QB's in the league right now.

as much as I don't like the eagles, Mc Nabb had weak recievers ( Except for T.O. for 1 1/2 seasons ) and did more that Vick. you can have a strong arm,and a quick release, but a ball thrown hard with a quick release to the other team is still an interception. Vick had success his first couple of years untill the defenses figured out how to handel him then he became average QB. He was 65% hype and 35% good player. He was popular because he could run fast for a qb.
