Duke has named its new director of basketball operations. Coach Mike Krzyzewski on Tuesday announced that his son-in-law, former Army player Chris Spatola, has been promoted. Spatola was a graduate assistant and head team manager last season for the Blue Devils, and before that he was a battery commander and executive officer in the U.S. Army. Spatola is taking over for Mike Schrage, who followed longtime Krzyzewski assistant Johnny Dawkins to Stanford. Spatola is married to Krzyzewski's daughter Jamie.

typical nepotism. coach k wii retire, son in law destroys duke and gets fired. sound familiar. it would be a glorious day to see some yuppie destroy this disgusting program

May 21, 2008  09:06 AM ET

I'm sure he would've gotten that job on merit alone...*rolls eyes*.

Golf-
I HATE Duke & hope they fail.

But 'yuppie' ?
I mean, he was in the Army....he served the country.
Maybe he's a moron, maybe not.....but he deseves a little respect- NOT because he's coach K's inlaw- but because he served the country

Awwww...this story is so **** sacharine sweet I can't stand it. The TRUTH has learned that during the rigorous interview process Coach Shechefksi asked Spatola if he could **** gold......I guess we know the outcome?

May 21, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Some things NEVER changes. He played basketball at ARMY, he married coach K's daughter, sounds like a qualified candidate to me.

My prediction is that Mike Krzyzewski never gets within shouting distance of another championship. Whether because of nationwide hatred of the Duke brand or because K is simply not adjusting to changing times, the guy seems to have lost the ability to recruit seven blue-chippers a year the way he used to.

This story is just further confirmation of how out of touch Krzyzewski now is.

Brad,

You make some good point and most I agree with. Coach K has to do more recruiting now and other team are getting some of those top level recruits now. This year's Duke team had just one guy that could create his own shot and that was Henderson.

Duke isn't nearly as athletic as they used to be. I too think it will be a long time coming for Duke to win another championship. They were seeded too high this year an got bounced early. Dickie V need to stop over hyping them..

Here's hoping Duke's best years are IN FACT behind them.

COACH K IS A ****
THE NATION | 05/21/08, 12:57 PM

Whatever **** stands for, I fully concur with your assessment.

May 21, 2008  01:16 PM ET

Coach K's problem is he won't go after players he thinks are "one & done". I'm sorry, that is just stubborn. I know he cares about academics and all that good stuff, but he is the BASKETBALL COACH. Not the President of the University. His job is to field a team that can compete and win a championship. Maybe he'll change his ways one day...

May 21, 2008  03:50 PM ET

As soon as the olympics are over DUKE will be back.

May 21, 2008  08:28 PM ET

i hate duke but i give k credit. if he does'nt recruit one and dones i might become a fan. i wish the nba would take these prima-donnas right-away.

May 21, 2008  09:54 PM ET

K should look at Knight and think.....go out with priciple's or championships.....you don't have to sell your soul to the devil these days to be successful....but you do have to change with the times......if only the dinosaur's listened....and darwin was wrong

May 22, 2008  03:36 AM ET

How convenient.

May 22, 2008  10:28 AM ET

As soon as the olympics are over DUKE will be back.
BUCKGUY | 05/21/08, 03:50 PM

Agreed. "Duke" is printed on a number of teams' 2008-09 schedules.

May 22, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Not only is Coach K's son-in-law promoted but his daughter is the team psychologist -- imagine having to go to the Coach's daughter when you have an issue with the team, other players, playing time, the coaching staff etc. Not likely is it?

"I see your lips moving but no words are coming out of your mouth"
Duke always has a solid program every year, granted they have not won a championship in 7 years but basketball fans know that time is imminent in the near future under Olympic coach K. Think about it-he coached and jelled nba stars to win the gold; that takes ingenuity and passion.Clearly the statement speaks for itself. A quick team dominating a big team can be successful with the right chemistry of players; he is close. If you live in NC you are either a carolina fan or Duke fan......Let's Go Duke...hometownNC-home of the NCAA powerhouses.
