Chicago closer to outdoor game

The Blackhawks may be moving closer to being named host for the NHL's outdoor Winter Classic next season. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said last week that the proposed game at Yankee Stadium isn't as likely to happen because of a "variety of issues," according to Newsday...Chicago is considered one of the other finalists to be the host for the game, which was played for the first time on New Year's Day at Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium.

It's Not!

Why let a piece of **** team like Chicago get an outdoor game ...?

Someone mentioned it the other day (I forget who) but Flyers - Pens in beaver stadium is a great idea

Report Offensive Comment

Which stadium in Chicago? Soldier Field, Wrigley, or whatever they're calling Comiskey these days?

I heard sumthing about Flyers-Pens at State College

I think it was Gov. Rendell

Uh, last year in Buffalo wasn't the first one at all - maybe the first ANNUAL, if they start doing it every year - but I'm pretty sure the outdoor game in Edmonton against Montreal - the Heritage Classic - was the first

Hey Canada, American English not Candian Frenglish... It's a first on New Years Day... Not first ever.

I like that cold weather city's finally have a significant game to host. Other than the Winter X-Games I guess. Or the Iditarod (that spelled out looks creepy).

The heritage classic was the first...discounting of course the time when they actually did play outdoors...
Trivia...Its why they switch ends after each period...due to the sun in the eyes.

I like the idea of it going to Chicago, good original 6 team and big sport city and they deserve a boost for their hockey team after years of suffering under the Bill Wirtz regime...
Hawks vs Red Wings works for me.

I don't mind classic teams, but I'm guessing the caliber of the teams aren't being taken into consideration?

I'm with you, hockey is still steeped in tradition, and Original Six works well

If they thought the wind was bad in Buffalo this year, wait til they get to the WINDY CITY. It's too bad the Vikings and Twins both play in domes. Minnesota would be a great place to have an outdoor game. I think they have to have it in a west city next year, so Chicago makes sense. Outside of that, how about Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Bruins vs. Canadiens?

Why not have the NY Rangers play in Mystery, Alastka against the town's old timers? I think this will wear out over time. I don't see the big deal of being outdoors and watching hockey. I'd think most people go because they think it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. The more games they have outdoors, the less that rings true. I remember playing outside as a kid with duct tape on my face make and over my ears to keep the wind out, not fun. I prefer to be able to sit in a rink with just a t-shirt and watch a game.

I still the All Star Game should be played this way (Skills Comp and all)

That's ALASKA, hockeypuck_9, not ALASTKA.

U.S. Government - read the article again, it sure sounds to me like they are saying it was played for the first time in Buffalo ths past New Year. Not that its a huge deal either way.

Oh, and to save you further embarassment, next time you want to make fun of a person's english (especially if that person is from Canada, where I am an English speaking citizen) don't follow it up by pluralizing "city" to "citys", its actually "cities". Just for future reference...

Mystery Alaska?
Does that include the monkey

Now if we get the outdoor games back, maybe we can get them to get that damn white coloring out of the ice!

The article states about the outdoors games: "which was played for the first time on New Year's Day at Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium." That is patently wrong! But then ..... what do you expect from the Chicago Tribune! When it comes to hockey, they don't know their mouth from their b*utt hole!

The Edmonton Oilers pioneered the idea with the first ever NHL outdoors game when they hosted the Montreal Canadians on a bitterly cold day at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. The palce was jam packed with crazy fans from everywhere to witness this unique event. Unfortunately, the Oilers lost that game.

Gotta give credit to whom credit is due: the city of Edmonton and the Edmonton Oilers. Now everybody is jumping on the outdoors game idea acting as if they were the first to think of it. Not!

not defending bad reporting, (for I never will), but maybe the writer meant the first time as a "regular" event?
I think the Commonwealth Game was done as a one-off, and most people in the USA were probably surprised by the success. I suspect people in Canada weren't surprised
