Ducks General Manager Brian Burke says he has given Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne until next month's NHL entry draft to inform the club of their intentions to either play in 2008-09 or retire. Burke says he has spoken with both players, including a recent face-to-face meeting with Niedermayer, and let them know that they won't be afforded the luxury of rejoining the Ducks midway through the season, as they did in 2007-08.

May 22, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Well hurrah for that, what a joke that was.

May 22, 2008  08:37 AM ET

I agree...

May 22, 2008  08:48 AM ET

It's about time they stopped pandering to these players. Either play the whole season or retire.

May 22, 2008  09:13 AM ET

The deadline for these two already passed as far as im concerned. If you dont come off the ice after getting beat out saying "damnit i cant wait till next year" you should become a cabana boy for Mrs Burke!!!

May 22, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Didn't Selane retire?

May 22, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Hey Filthadelphia fans...How's that off-season going?

May 22, 2008  01:31 PM ET

Drastic change in attitude after that bitter loss to the Stars? Don't listen to him guys, he's bluffing.

May 22, 2008  01:58 PM ET

This could very well be one of Burkes final decisions...with the Ducks.

May 22, 2008  02:05 PM ET

DC, Selanne said he'll retire from International play after the IIHF Worlds.

May 22, 2008  03:00 PM ET

cmh- And if he retires from the NHL this season he will have set more records than he did as a rookie in doing so...for most retirements in one season!

May 22, 2008  03:12 PM ET

Baun-ded, ha, ha! Good catch!

May 22, 2008  04:15 PM ET

The Bruins will gladly trade anyone and a draft pick for these "over the hill" guys !!!

May 22, 2008  04:17 PM ET

hey burghguy, i hate the flyers too, but i wasn't laughing at your team for the years and years of last or second to last place while my team was on a serious cup run. good luck in the finals detroit, knock the penguins out.

Bostongm...yes I do mean YOU this time...
Please take a note:
Baun-ded did not make the above remark.

May 22, 2008  06:26 PM ET

ya think burke would be giving these guys a dead line if they actually went on to repeat as champs?

May 22, 2008  06:27 PM ET

I call the bluff... if he tries to do something that ridiculous he'd better be looking for a job managing a Dairy Queen in the Dallas area at the same time.

May 22, 2008  07:47 PM ET

Obviously, their little trick to get around the regular season did not benefit them in the playoffs. Nobody should be too good to get to skip the regular season. If they had played the regular season, they might have had a highter seed so they would not have had to face a divisional foe in the first round. I hope they go to the golf course and turn pro and forget about hockey. They don't deserve to play with the guys who come to the rink everday to practice and play. BYE BYE

May 22, 2008  08:24 PM ET

Knowing how Burke operates...He probably would take Chara & Lucic....still feel like making a trade bostongm?
