Preventing two of their defensemen from becoming unrestricted free agents, the Devils have signed Mike Mottau and Sheldon Brookbank, each to two-year contracts, The Post has learned. Sources say Mottau will earn $750,000 and $775,000 in his deal, up from the 475G the 30-year-old made last season, his first full year in the NHL. Brookbank is believed to have signed for $500,000 and $550,000.

so, they signed two guys that take up about 9 minutes of game time between them. Good thing Lou made this his first priority

May 22, 2008  09:26 AM ET

Mottau acutally played on the 2nd defensive pairing and averaged about 20 minutes a game.

May 22, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Mottau i can understand...but brookbank is buttcity

May 22, 2008  09:48 AM ET

brookbank better be a two way signing. He belongs in Lowell

May 22, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Mike ..... who?
Sheldon .... who?

May 22, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Brookbank is very underrated and should be a third-pairing guy who gets some PP time and gives them a little toughness on the backline - something they have lacked.

Mottau is solid, also, but would best off as the second guy in the second pairing. They could shed some of the others in that crew, especially if they can somehow add a top-three defenseman.

Marquee names in Newark, maybe, but they're not exactly Niedermayer or Rafalski.

May 22, 2008  02:16 PM ET

The best thing the Devils could do is put Marty on the Trade block at this time in his career for the greatest return and fix for the Devils.

May 22, 2008  02:42 PM ET

Baun-ded is that the best thing the devils can do? lets be real...Devils need to get rid of dead weight...Gionta, White, Asham, Brylin...We are 2 or 3 players away from a serious cup run...

May 22, 2008  03:04 PM ET

Moving Brodeur now would not be a bad thing. He would bring a huge return for their present and future. His advancing age will cause his play to decline and he needs a strong backup to reduce his game load. Think about it. After Marty...what do the Devils have to look forward to?
This guy is GOLD on the future of the Devils on the trade block more so than being stuck in their crease.

May 22, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Baund-ded, that is about the dumbest thing i have heard you say. Trading marty, and what goaltending would the devils get back that would be good enough? Devils have the money to pick up a few key players, and they could be back in the run for the cup like usual. Marty is still an above average player.

May 22, 2008  04:35 PM ET

Not quite as dumb as you might think Averysux44- What do you think Marty is going to bring to the Devils going forward with that team?
They could pick up a good goalie and improve the TEAM out front. Increase draft picks and wish Marty well before his game declines...
Try this headline: The Marty Sweepstakes : now start to imagine what possibilities that would entail.
The Devils are a far way from being a real contender by simply making a few tinkering adjustments.

May 22, 2008  07:27 PM ET

they sign these two guys and let brian rafalski walk away, thank you!

May 22, 2008  09:31 PM ET

Marty stays.

May 23, 2008  12:04 AM ET

Yeah, great idea, let's trade away the greatest goalie of all time and one of the main reasons the Devils have won 3 cups in the last 12 years. Yeah, he's definitely on a decline, especially after setting the record for wins in a season last year. Brodeur still has a lot left in him and I think you keep him until he retires. You simply keep what the Devils have been doing and that's stay in your farm system and build from within and around Marty. It has worked numerous times for them and they have a bunch of young, promising talent right now. Besides, its not goaltending thats hurting the Devils, its the lack of offense and the low output of goals to give Marty some support. He can't always shut teams out or just give up one goal. I do agree, however, that you need a decent back up to give him a break more often than he's received the last two years.

May 23, 2008  01:11 AM ET

the devils will not win a cup for a long time. not the way marty brodeur is being used during the season and not the way lou spends his offseason not shopping.

May 23, 2008  03:06 AM ET

This is great. They signed two guys that the world has never heard of. I do have a question for any Devils fans: How the hell do you guys put up with Doc Emrick and his horrible commentary every night? That guys is the worst thing to ever happen to play-by-play. I would rather listen to a mute call the game.

May 23, 2008  09:13 AM ET

wtnelson...you bite your tounge! doc emrick is a saint!

May 23, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Wrong... Doc Emrick sucks. I will stick by what I say.

May 23, 2008  10:51 PM ET

What does insulting Doc Emrick have to do with the Devils resigning a couple of players? Sounds to me someone's bitter for whatever reason. And the idea of trading Brodeur is ridiculous. These people come out of the woodwork every year and say 'Marty is aging', 'Marty isn't what he used to be' and that Lou should trade him. Hate to break the news to you, but he's still the best goalie in the game (why, I even heard a rumor he's up for a certain trophy this year...?) Oh yeah, and Mottau is a good signing because he works so well with White. But Brookbank... I just don't see it. Frequently, he looks nervous with the puck and has caused more than his share of turnovers.
