Why Paterno won't play Pitt

Joe Paterno said he's disappointed that BCS officials last month rejected a plan that would have determined the national champion through a four-team playoff system, starting in 2010. "I've always been for a playoff," he said. Paterno, however, is not interested in resuming Penn State's in-state rivalry with Pitt -- a series that has been in hibernation since 2000. "I think it would be nice to play Pitt," Paterno said. "But if we had had the Big East Conference that I tried to get -- what do you want me to do? I thought it would have been great, but Pitt didn't want to get into the Big East Conference except for basketball in those days. "We had to look around and we got hooked up with the Big Ten. ... What happened happened, and that's where we are."

Get 'em Joe!

I'm a PSU alum that attended these games, and we need to get it back. I know Joe's ticked off that the other teams didn't form the conference he wanted, but he needs to get over it. Other rivalries survive with the teams being in different conferences: (Fla vs FSU, UGA vs GaTech, ..).

Get over it and get over yourself Paterno and do what's good for the sport in your state.

May 23, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Whatever. Penn State has no obligation to fill sPitt's stadium and have sPitt force PSU fans to buy tickets for 3 lousy sPitt games, just to get the tickets to the one PSU game. Bundling tickets is pathetic, and is reserved for programs like Temple. Pitt is in that category.

May 23, 2008  09:37 AM ET

If the Big 10 conference were to add Pitt, it would have 12 members. With 12 members, it could have an East and a West conference and a playoff to determine the Big 10 Champion. Penn State could again play Pitt. It was such a great rivalry. It would be better Illnois/Northwestern and Indiana/Purdue and on a par with Michigan/Michigan State.

May 23, 2008  10:34 AM ET

If Pitt really wanted to play Penn State, they would not double their ticket prices when Penn State comes to town, which they did because it is the only way they could sell out their, err, the Steelers stadium. Here is a hint, stop jacking up ticket prices, get your own freaking stadium and that would be a good start.

I love this guy. He "calls it, like he sees it". They just dropped the ball basically on scheduling Joe Pa's team.

May 23, 2008  01:13 PM ET

Funny that Joe blames Pitt for not joining "his" version of the Big East, but Joe wanted 2 home games from each of the Big East conference opponents for every away game. His reasoning for not having home and home with Big East was that Penn State thought they were going to lose money because of their basketball program. When the leadership of the Big East turned down his insane request, he tucked tail and went to the Big Ten. Under his plan, Penn State would have had a minimum of 7 home games per year. Hardly fair to the rest of the conference.

May 23, 2008  01:43 PM ET

Are you guys kidding.

Penn State wanted nothing to do with the Big East - which was originally a basketball conference. (In which they would have gotten killed in every year.)

Just like they wanted to keep scheduling Rutgers - as long as the games were either at PSU (3) or the Meadowlands (1) - but not at Rutgers.

Yes, Paterno is a legend, but it is time for him to stop telling half-truths.

May 23, 2008  05:02 PM ET

Why would Paterno even care about a BCS playoff? He's never going to make it that far, even if he was 40yrs old he wouldnt ever make it there with his wear recruiting and oldschool coaching. PSU is a mediocore program in a mediocore conf. How many National Champioships has he won in his 200 yrs of coaching there? 2. Wow, real impressive...

May 23, 2008  05:35 PM ET

They need to have a steady Pitt./PSU game every year like FSU/UF/Miami/USF and UCF should play each other yearly

May 23, 2008  06:22 PM ET

Sounds like Joe is holding a grudge! And wouldn't you know it, just when Pitt is on the rise Joe wants to take his ball and go home!

May 23, 2008  06:36 PM ET

I'd like to see that rivalry reinstated.

I guess you don't recall PSU was 1 loss away in 2005 and finished #3 in the country. I also take it you have never been to a PSU game to see why you are so far off base. That stadium is packed every single game with 110,000 fans and they have some of the best facilities in the nation. PSU is a historic football program for a reason and that reason is JOEPA

May 23, 2008  09:05 PM ET

Why PSU won't play Pitt? Why take a chance on little brother kicking your assteroid. Joe has been in the bussiness long enough to know that beating Pitt is not worth the chance of having Pitt beat PSU. With all the talk of replacing Joe Pa, the last thing Joe needs is Pitt. Fans telling him it's time to go. Joe's glass is half empty like it or not. The question that I have is-is Pitt. still the little brother? PSU Fan's I'd say the coach is not so sure.

May 23, 2008  11:21 PM ET

JoePoo is full of it. He's the one who backed out of the Pitt rivalry game-- which in my opinion was one of the greatest rivalry games in the history of college football.

It's ridiculous for him to say that PSU couldn't play Pitt now just because they're in different leagues. Clemson-SoCar, UGA-GT, UF-FSU, & Iowa-ISU couldn't back out of their in-state, out-of-conference rivalry games even if there were a nuclear holocaust and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalpyse trotted onto the gridiron.

JoePuss backed out of the Pitt game because he's afraid. He'd rather play another cupcake on the off-chance that he can outlast Bobby Bowden in their death-race for career wins.

I'd support a constitutional ammendment requiring PSU and Pitt to renew their rivalry game.

May 23, 2008  11:32 PM ET

Wow, its amazing that people get so worked up over something that is really innocuous. How is this even a story? People on the east coast know that Penn St and Pitt aren't playing anymore, but the truth is this is not that big a deal anywhere else outside of Pennsylvania; only a handful of Pitt fans even exist anyway. I'm not trying to be mean to Pitt, but its not like Ohio St/Michigan or Auburn/Alabama or USC/Notre Dame stopped playing here. At the end of the day, this is not a great rivalry in any sense of the phrase. One historically great programs ans another that has had a best sporadic success and has little fan support

May 23, 2008  11:41 PM ET

In retrospective it might have been better for PSU to be in the Big-East as far as how things turned out since their joining the Big-Ten. But the games they have had against the bucknuts and Michigan have been good ones. As far as Pitt or anyone else joining the Big-Ten at this time would not do that team or the conference any good. I with Joe Pa, what do "they" expect him to do? I am not that familiar with Pitt but i think that a series between the two schools would not have much following except in that general area.

May 24, 2008  02:15 AM ET

Maybe he forgot where Pitt is located?

May 24, 2008  07:38 AM ET

I don't think Pitt should really want them to play Penn State because they will be murdered every year
