Secret to Volquez's success

You'd never know it now, but Edinson Volquez used to have trouble controlling his emotions on the mound. "He's not easily rattled," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He doesn't panic." That's the 2008 version of Volquez. He wasn't like that in his first two stints with the Texas Rangers in 2005 and '06. "The Rangers talked to me a lot about being too emotional in the game," Volquez said. Volquez is trying to pass that knowledge onto his young rotation-mate, Johnny Cueto. Cueto gets visibly upset with himself when things go wrong. Two losses of concentration cost him runs Wednesday in a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He threw a wild pitch with a runner at third base and threw a wild pickoff attempt with a runner at third. Volquez is 7-1 with a 1.33 ERA.

Looking good. Since pitching is hard to find, did the Reds get the better of the deal? Hamilton is good, but this guy may be the real deal.

And Hamilton is always going to be a risk to turn up in a crackhouse or seedy motel room with a needle in his arm. Sorry, but true.

1 season doesnt make a career. its a little early to deem Volquez the 2nd coming of jose rijo. but it would certainly help the reds if he's for real and not a flash.

FMSD...that is funny. I bet she wanted a "PH" instead of an "F" in there but no one understood her.

Could it be his stupid effing parents who couldnt spell Edison right?
Field Marshall Sunny Day | 05/23/08, 08:29 AM

What makes you so sure he's named after Thomas Edison or any other "Edison"?

A minute-long jog around the Internet digs up lots of other "Edinsons" in Latin America....

Who gives a flying **** what his name is? His parents could have named him "Precious" or "Sweet Pea" as long as he pitches well. Sure, he'd get beat up a lot, but that would just make him tougher. That's why I named my son "Pi$$ off" and my daughter "**** my ****"

May 23, 2008  12:09 PM ET

"When I was young and in my prime I use to get beat up all the time. Now that I'm old and gray I always try to run away"!!! (Really it's limp away)

May 23, 2008  12:10 PM ET

All misspelled. Not saying its after Thomas Edison.... Being latin...I can tell you its not a common name. EDISON is.
Field Marshall Sunny Day | 05/23/08, 11:38 AM

I'll have to take your word for it, then....

Bottom line, I'm with Madhatter: As long as he's pitching the way he is, I don't give a rat's ass how he spells it.

Hey chicken....are you referring to names like "Hunter Pence" or "Morgan Ensburg"

These guys belong behind a desk, not on a ballfield.

Travis Fryman was another one. Names like this just don't instill any kind of fear.

If I were one of them I would've changed my name to Big Balls McGavin or Jack Lugnut or Frank Asskicker.

I always thought "Dick Pole" was a great baseball name. Remmber "Rusty Kuntz"?

Neither of these guys were worth a **** on the field, but man they could work the ladies....

And my all time favorite is "Shooty Babbitt"

...and the name "Sky" is just as bad as prince. There was a Sky on an opposing high school back in my day. Nice guy, but c'mon...what the hell? Then later in life I met a guy named "King"....again...wtf....he didn't live in a castle.

I knew a cat named Marion...he was feckin' tough, played in the NFL

May 23, 2008  04:49 PM ET

The trick for this guy now will be to make sure Dusty doesn't have him throw 150 pitches every time out

May 23, 2008  04:57 PM ET

Oh, and I think Stubby Clapp has to be somewhere in the best baseball names

May 23, 2008  11:15 PM ET

Maybe the Cubs can hire him during the off-season to help Zambrano control his emotions, and his fluid levels as well.

Concerning feminine names in baseball, I think there was a fellow they called Babe that played the game pretty well.

Volquez was supposed to be an excellent pitcher coming over but this?Unbelievable!!!

I know the secret to his success. It's real easy. Are you ready? Shhh... It's a secret. (His low and away changeup) Now - don't tell the big league hitters because if they adjust to this pitch before he can stay a step ahead of them he is no longer a success. As a Red's fan I hope he continues to perform his second time around the national league.
