Yankee Stadium game on thin ice

The prospect of holding the NHL Winter Classic at Yankee Stadium on Jan. 1, 2009 is in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the Yankees attempting to convince the city that a pair of major concerns can be overcome so the Rangers can play an outdoor game in The Bronx before the World's Most Famous Stadium closes its doors. The NHL needs to make commitment to the Winter Classic's host city within the next week or two. If the Yankees' issues with the city cannot be resolved, Wrigley Field in Chicago is believed the second choice to host the 2009 outdoor game. If the Rangers are awarded the game, it is believed they would meet the Bruins on New Year's Day in what would be the first of a home-and-home, with the return at Fenway on a year to be named later. The Islanders and Devils have lobbied the league to be named as the Rangers' opponent, but NBC, which will televise the match, has no interest in a game between teams representing the same market.

The last sporting event played at The Stadium should be a Yankee game.

I think a Giants-Eagles game would be a nice send-off.

It is NOT on thin ice at all! There will be NO ICE.
This is a useless rumour to debate.
I'm speechless...I have no speech.

i'd like to see a pittsburgh/philly match up at penn states football arena, which I can't think of it's name right now, or something in anne arbor. a caps/pens game would be good too (semin and OV v. Crosby and Malkin)

Put it on ice for good! It's a dumb idea anyway! Fing a different venue that can more easily be converted/adapted for hockey. An odd shaped baseball stadium is not a good choice!

Yea I just can't wait for it to be turned into a museum. Or get bulldozed. Whatever. I just pretend to care about things that don't matter much. Self-righteous ****.

I hope if they do go through with the hockey game it's 95 degrees that day!!!

May 27, 2008  08:56 PM ET

They need to slow down with the outdoor games, make it an every 2-or-3 year tradition.
