Titans expect more from WR

Paul Williams, a third-round pick out of Fresno State, is a popular topic among Titans fans these days. The only receivers the Titans have added since last season are veteran Justin McCareins and rookie Lavelle Hawkins. In all the talk about upgrading weapons for quarterback Vince Voung, a big improvement out of a player such as Williams could be a huge factor. After the week's third organized team activity practice, offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger said he's seen good signs.

If Heimerdinger says so than it must be true. I always take dudes with the name Heimerdinger seriously. Or any dude with the word dinger in his last name.

We should get rid of Brandon "I drop the ball" Jones !!!

The Titans can hope for more from their WRs, but it'd be wrong for them to expect for more. When you don't bother to take WRs in rounds one or two, the most you should expect is that you are getting a 3rd, or at best, 2nd string wide receiver. If you want an impact player, use a high draft pick to get one! Don't expect second day picks to come in and provide a reliable target for Vince Young. I feel so bad for the poor guy. They just keep drafting running backs as if they expect them to teach him how to put his head down and run between the tackles. Yeah, that's good for the development of a young (no pun intended) QB...

This passing attack will be better this year because of Alge Crumpler. He's never had a great passing QB, and Vince isn't one either, but I'd take him over a felon, and/or Joey Harrington, any day of the week. He'll give Vince that outlet he's never had. Every QB needs a good TE to take the pressure off. I see 900 yards and 5 TD's for him this year.

The other recievers are a year older, and didn't do too bad last year. I also like Justin McCareins, he's pretty good.

maybe the titans should have picked up one of the many wideouts in free agency or the draft the front office dropped the ball on this one(no pun intended)

May 24, 2008  04:14 PM ET

Yeah Jazz, you make a good point. Crumpler was great, but wasn't he a fixture on a team that never had a legitimate WR and a mobile QB that struggled with his accuracy? Not to compare Vick to Young because Young has a much better attitude and he's a winner, but a young QB is not going to develop without playmakers around him. Crumpler is a good start, but passing on EVERY WR in the draft to take ANOTHER running back (3rd time in the last 3 years they've used a 1st or 2nd round pick on a RB) is pretty lame. McCareins sucks also.

stupid titans

May 24, 2008  04:33 PM ET

And I just ignored the story about Horn wanting out of the ATL...

May 24, 2008  05:45 PM ET

When the hell did the Titans get wide receivers?

May 24, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Vince Young was awesome at Texas, and he played really well for an NFL rookie. Second year didn't look so good. I would absolutely love to see him have a great year with the Titans. He is so much fun to watch when he gets going. I saw him work his magic the first year, so I know he can do it in the NFL. I just wish the staff would find the right support and schemes to make it happen.

if this is what da big burnout is implying then he's right, maybe the titans should make a offer for horn

May 24, 2008  11:05 PM ET

All of you griping about the Titans not taking a WR in the 1st/2nd round of the draft need to get a grip. ALL of the analysts/pundits/coaches ALL OVER the media said "there's not a #1 WR in this draft." Then you want to gripe because the Titans didn't take a WR in round 1 or 2. WHY?

Why would they take another #2 or #3 receiver when they already have at least FIVE on the squad who already know the playbook.

The Titans aren't stupid. The people griping are the stupid ones.

You got that staight JuaguarQb

May 25, 2008  07:48 PM ET

allright, well you made a good point da big burnout.
and LadyVolsFan, what are you talking about? there was plenty of great 2nd round material: DeSean Jackson is fast and a great returner to replace Pacman, James Hardy is pretty quick and he's amazingly tall, and Limas Sweed would have been able to work extremely well with Vince Yound since they're both from Texas and have already played together.

Chris Johnson will help VY alot, that type of QB needs a back that can handle the screen game at times. Thats what made Vince so good at Texas. Don't forget Algie Crumpler coming in at TE, that may be an underrated pick up as well.

I loved the Chris Johnson pick in the first. He has game breaking ability period. I was concerned about not picking a wideout before the Hawk but then I realized; what the hell am I thinking? This offense can't blame their red zone failure on just the wideouts it was Norm Chow's play calling as well. I liked the defensive players we picked, and with Heimerdinger calling plays on offense and the unshackeling of VY I think the Titan's are gonna surprise a lot of teams/fans/ and self proclaimed experts this year. Good riddance to Norm Chow!
