Porter: Cheating Patriots got off easy

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter, whose Steelers teams were stopped one game shy of two Super Bowl berths because of AFC Championship losses to New England, believes the league let the Patriots off easy for their role in the Spygate cheating scandal. "They cheated," Porter said Friday. "I feel like there should be an asterisk on it, just because [disgraced track star] Marion Jones, she gets caught, they take the gold medals back. Obviously, they got caught."

It's because Marion Jones is a girl. Or because she is black. Or because she has long hair. Or because she is... oops I'm running out of excuses. Quick, Porter think of one for me!

Anyone who tells you that it isn't extremely beneficial to have information about the other teams offensive and defensive signals indicating plays and positioning is dreaming. Every little thing that is done at the pro-level is magnified in importance to the outcomes - plays and games. Certainly the Patriots are a talented bunch, but there have been many equally as talented teams over the last 10 years. An asterisk? Certainly. Fines on NFL teams, players and coaches are like meter change. But this version of the NFL management didn't really hurt the Patriots all that much. Come on. Take away their 2nd first round draft pick? Please. They may as well have taken away a case of ankle wrap.

why is there a picture of joey porte on the steelers? he plays on the dolphins, not the steelers. what they did wasnt that bad. its not like they wer giving their whole team steroids, paying the refs (italian soccer), or beating up your opposition with baseball bats (cant remember who it was, but i knoww it was some ice skater girl). The Pats legacy should NOT be ruined because of this. im sure that ALL of the 32 teams have done something thats against the rules. they just dont get caught

would we really care if the dolphins got caught cheating? the only reason this is such a big deal is because its the Pats.

I'm guessing because they beat the Steelers in the playoffs and he's implying they cheated to do so.

Oh, boo hoo hoo, my heart bleeds for you Joey Porter.
Get over your lost chance at a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers and strive for one with the Dolphins.

"This will never end will it?"

nope. it's probably going to follow the Pats like an air of bad flatulence for years.

He is right. The Pats are now the scum of the NFL. Undeserving of respect.

May 24, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Porter is absolutely right. And he's not the only one who thinks so. There are many who professionally write, announce, etc for sports who think the same thing. Some even call for Belicheck's suspension, in order for this to be completely over. The Pats got off easy, everyone, including their fans, know it and if you don't think so, you're being biased and are too proud to admit it.

May 24, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Calling for Belichick's suspension?? More like calling for his head on a plate!! Well, I'm sorry, he's not John the Baptist so take off, ey.

May 24, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Yes, what a scholar you are Cavman5. Like why should we nag Barry Bonds about a little bit of steriod use. It's not like he was caught stealing the catchers signals.

May 24, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Belichick really dragged this franchise down...their prestige is in the negatives.

First, never compare Belichick to a great man of the Bible, John the Baptist. Belicheck couldn't hold a candle to him. Second, I was quoting an ESPN anaylst who stated Bill should be suspended. Here's the link, check it out for yourself and please, for the sake of true fans of football, stop being one of those biased fans.

Go cry a river.

May 24, 2008  10:08 AM ET

In the 2004 AFC Championship Game, the big TD pass from Brady to Deion Branch was the most significant play of the game. If he already new the safety was blitzing because of a stolen signal, the entire outcome of the game was directly altered by cheating.

Just my opinion, but the players should be the ones reading the defense - not some 400lb coach on the sidelines or in the booth...

May 24, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Joey who?

May 24, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Notre Dame should seriously consider suing or terminating Charlie Weis. He was arguably hired under false pretenses, with his so called "play-calling genius" more attributable to some illegal video than any innate football wisdom...

Sorry Pats fans - I used to respect your team, but its awfully hard to do now because of Belichick and all of this SpyGate crap.
