Quenneville in line for Sharks job?

We now have definitive proof that San Jose is a hockey town. Earlier this week, a civilian spotted Joel Quenneville on the streets of our fair city. And actually recognized Quenneville. And tipped off a Mercury News columnist about it. Naturally, the Sharks didn't admit to anything. General Manager Doug Wilson is sticking by his stance of not commenting on specific names through the team's hiring process. The hockey voices I trust in Canada also say that Quenneville is the logical man for the Sharks. His record in Colorado was 131-92-23 during his three seasons there.

The civilian obviously was an Avalanche fan.

Good luck if you hire Q! You will instantly become an underachiever with the talent you have because of Q's coaching style. To make matters worse you will scrap just to get the 7th or 8th seed and still flame out of the playoffs. That has been his M.O. with any of his teams. Just the facts. The guy is the Marty Schottenheimer or George Karl of the NHL.

If I could run the Sharks I would go after some of the younger coaching talent available!

Wilson and Quenville - Dumb and Dumber!

May 25, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Wow, you guys are so badly uninformed. When Joel was with the Blues, he won the President's trophy as the league's best team (hardly scrapping for that 7 or 8th seed eh jhildebrand). They reached the conference finals, but lost to a better team. This year, the guy should be in the discussion for coach of the year just for getting a severely injury-depleted Avs team to the playoffs, let alone winning a series against Minnesota. "Just the facts"?? Do some research there next time.

If winning cups is your benchmark for success...then by that logic...the series is over for the Penguins.

Why should I?

That is not it at all bostongm. Something else is bothering me. I can argue just fine.

Whether its warranted or not I dunno, but Joel does have that underachiever stigma. But then again, I'm sure Doug Wilson will make a good move though...

May 26, 2008  09:21 AM ET

He shouldn't have lost his job in Colorado, a coach should never be blamed for his team's injuries, and that team was molested by injuries to key guys all season and playoff long.

He is, however, a coach who has failed to live up to expectations at the end of his past two jobs. I would think that this team should get themselves a coach who HAS gotten over the hump before, but Wilson may be concerned that a major strategical shift could negatively affect this team and drop them into rebuilding mode. By hiring a coach that is very similar to Wilson, the team won't have to completely relearn a system, and hopefully won't skip a beat next season (in theory). That's my guess on this thinking, anyway...

The question is why would Wilson not want a change in strategy, the one they have been committed to for the last while isn't getting them very far. I mean these are professional hockey players they are able to learn new systems. Boudreau did it part way through the season with Washington

I agree with evolv, the Sharks are a veteran team, they should be able to adapt. They just better make sure they get Campbell locked up or they're in trouble.
