Is Harrison becoming irrelevant?

It was a powerful and revealing, if relatively innocent, comment that surely could creep under the skin of the man who has caught more passes than all but three players in NFL history. "I guess I'm Marv now," Reggie Wayne said last weekend. If Wayne, the Indianapolis Colts' eighth-year wide receiver, who had his best season in 2007, is now "Marv," where then does that leave Marvin Harrison, the 35-year-old Philadelphia native with more than 1,000 catches in 12 seasons? On the downhill arc of his career? As the "other option" in the Colts' offensive arsenal? One more tweak away from becoming Mr. Irrelevant? A successful rehabilitation away from regaining his status as The Man? As questions about Harrison's possible connection to an April 29 shooting near his garage and car wash in North Philadelphia linger, there, too, are plenty about his football future, and not just where Wayne is concerned. No matter his physical prowess or unique speed, Harrison has reached the age of diminishing returns.

He's from Philadelphia they are all irrelevant.

Not sure he has become irrelevent, but he has officially become a person of interest in Philly.

It is sad that he is basically not important anymore. But the NFL stands for Not
For Long, and I guess he is realizing that now.

he is not irrelevant. he is still better than all but a small handful of WR in the league. and by football standards he is ancient. yet he still gets it done. he will be back next year just wait.

I agree. Hopefully he'll be back if not with Indy then with another team and be just as productive.

Sounds like Reg is going to get some cold steel pointed his way.

Kinda ridiculous for an article to refer to a future Hall of Famer as a Mr. Irrelevant. Yes, at 35, players tend to decline. But a little respect would be nice.

A job is waiting for him somewhere in the NFL!

May 25, 2008  02:49 PM ET

he wasn't irrelavent to the guy he pulled the gun on. isnt' he the poster boy for ghetto boy does good?

May 25, 2008  02:51 PM ET

The most ridiculous aspect of the article is that it neglects to point out that Manning always spreads the ball. Part of what made Harrison special in this prima-donna era is that he always accepted that and never complained when he didn't get the ball. If his off the fields issues gets resolved, I'm sure he'll accept being no 2 behing Wayne. Heck, he may not even have to change sides!

May 25, 2008  03:23 PM ET

The fact of the matter is Mr. Harrison is a relegated third receiver in their system because of the new blood drafted last and this year. Gonzalez is an up and coming stud rookie from last years draft and should benefit from a year in the same system and the colts still have their excellent stable of tight ends to throw to. Harrison is being kept as a token of his years of service, but if he strays from the straight to the narrows and is no longer productive coming into camp he will be cut or replaced on the depth chart straight and simple.

Harrison will be back next year to help Peyton win Dungys' last super bowl before he retires.

Now, see, that's where you're wrong. People here in Indy know, MArvin pouts non stop, and has been ever since Peyton has gone away from him and started to rely on Reggie and Dallas Clark more and more. He goes to the far end of the bench, refusing to talk to anyone, and refusing to let the trainers look at him. We're paying you $60 million, LET THE TRAINERS LOOK AT YOU IF YOU'RE HURT.
The fact is, Marvin has been checking out for the last three seasons, and no, again you're wrong, because Peyton Manning HAS NOT always spread the ball around. His first six seasons Marvin was the first and second option. And now that it's not that way anymore MArvin has an attitude. He has shown an unwillingness to take a hit in order to do his job, and we in Indy who have been paying attention know this.
Half the interceptions Peyton has thrown the past two seasons were because Marvin Harrison gets alligator arms when he hears footsteps. Unless he's getting two out of three passes thrown directed at him he's not happy. He's never been very physical but at least he was willing to take the licks before in order to move the chains, He can't run away from a lot of the corners in the league and now he's just not that effective.
Look for Marvin's role to shrink even more. He's had a great career but it defintiely on the downside. Dont feel bad for him, he's a rich man and a first ballot hall of famer. But this is why Polian drafted Anthony Gonzalez, NOT to replace Brandon Stokely. the fact is, they were looking for more toughness at the receiver position, because Polian will not sacrifice performance for nostalgia. It's about over for Marvin. Hope I'm wrong but I've seen it coming long before he got hurt last year.

Slip up by Wayne. Reggie is good, but not Marv good.

May 26, 2008  01:21 AM ET

Wow, Harrison is one of the best all time. I haven't kept with his legal problems but I doubt he will be irrelevant in Indy. Talk about a what have you done for lately league.

Now we know what Marvin was doing during all of his "down time" last season - target practice !!!
