Osborne has some big ideas

Tom Osborne is back in college athletics. And true to his previous careers as a coach and congressman, he has some ideas about how to fix things. Among his priorities: A proposal to give athletes roughly $2,500 in expense money beyond their scholarships to help meet "the cost of attendance." Putting pressure on the NBA to either draft a kid out of high school or wait three years after high school to draft him. The involvement of shoe companies and AAU coaches with youth basketball also alarms Osborne because of the influence they wield in the recruiting process. Osborne is also in favor of merit pay for top football officials to help keep them from jumping to the NFL. It's a proposal that has been embraced by league athletic directors and Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe.

Bring back the triple-option!

"$2,500 in expense money"

WOW- that can almost buy a tank of gas........

Seriously- wha't a couple of grand.
PAY THE KIDS.....the school gets MILLIONS from their athletes

Why do you think the ncaa doesnt want kids to get paid?
ITS SO THE SCHOOLS CAN MAKE MORE MONEY.....

May 25, 2008  01:16 PM ET

2500 would be a big paycut for these guys

May 25, 2008  01:33 PM ET

You could make more at USC, Reggie and Mayo did. But, on top of free education that would be a fair amount. Other parents have to provide for their kids as well, or work when they can.

May 25, 2008  02:37 PM ET

yes but most students have 2 parents

Any college athlete on scholarship is already getting paid - WELL! Taking a ball and running across the grass with it, or taking a ball and dropping it into a basket in exchange for a four year college education (not to mention national TV exposure) is MORE THAN FAIR!!! To imply that big-time college athletes are somehow being taken advantage of by universities is RIDICULOUS!

May 25, 2008  07:11 PM ET

Yes, they get paid very well as it is. And, I have posted this several times, but I will say it again. Very few if any colleges make a profit from sports. Several studies have been done on this, and only the top 5 or so football programs make a profit IF they get a BCS game that year. Factor in all the staff, facilities upkeep, Title IX, all the sports that do not make money, and there is nothing left. Football merely helps provide money for the other sports on campus.

"Taking a ball and running across the grass with it, or taking a ball and dropping it into a basket in exchange for a four year college education (not to mention national TV exposure) is MORE THAN FAIR!!! "

You are looking at it fro the wrong direction.

These athletes have a special talent that you or I DO NOT HAVE.
they can run fast, shoot a ball, etc.
YES in real life it is a joke- but why do ENTERTAINERS who make 20 mil a movie never get pointed at?
These ids are ENTERTAINERS who perform at a level any average person CAN NOT.so they are in great demand.

Someone is making $ off their backs- why shouldn't the kid make what he can while his window is open?

You are looking at it fro the wrong direction.

My "direction" is that these sports exist BECAUSE OF colleges and universities, and not vice versa. The term "student/athlete" should mean more than just a punchline. I'll spell this out very clearly, so I hope you get this: THEY GET TO GO TO COLLEGE FOR FREE. Thre fact that some of them (a small percentage by the way) choose to treat that as a joke does not entitle them to cash and gifts.

Since you're obviously such a big proponent of capitalism, look at it like this: The athlete SIGNS A CONTRACT with the school to play a sport in return for a college education. I realize the actual scholarship terms are a bit more extensive, but that's basically it. I doubt that it says "...and athlete shall, upon signing agreement, receive the plasma TV of their choice..." That's my direction.

May 26, 2008  01:52 AM ET

A Study in 2005 by the College Board showed that the average cost per year for a 4 year college was $15,566, or $62,264 for the full 4 years. If the student athlete redsirts 1 year, the cost goes up to $77,830. These numbers do not include room and board, or books.

May 26, 2008  02:42 AM ET

Forget the books, most don't use them anyways!

May 26, 2008  09:33 AM ET

It is a well known fact that being a Division 1 student/athlete is a full time job now....They have no time to make any "Walking Around Money"..

Give them $2,500 per year, the NCAA is making millions off them everyday of the year..

Wonder how much ESPN pays them to broadcast the different sporting events?

May 26, 2008  09:47 AM ET

"GET TO GO TO COLLEGE FOR FREE. "

I am obviously aware of this.....
Let me try again-

Why do YOU (did you) go to college- to get a good job & for the potential to make $. Some of us also go to learn & get an education. So why shouldn't these kids be ALLOWED to earn as much $ as they can, when they can & while they can?

The top tier athlete's goals- PRO BALL, MILLIONS
Yours & my goal- a career, decent house, a yearly vacation
are vastly different-

The kid's window of opportunity is small-
ESPECIALLY if they don't make it to the NBA.
So because of idealism- they should not be able to capitalize on their natural talent?
It makes no sense.

"My "direction" is that these sports exist BECAUSE OF colleges and universities, and not vice versa. The term "student/athlete" should mean more than just a punchline"

Your philosophy in THEORY is not wrong (and I do agree) - but in real life- it is out-dated

So in 10-20 years, when these (TOP TIER) kids/talents- don't go to schools- because they will be signing deals with shoe companies, going overseas or to a D league for 2 years.......
Do you think people will still be watching college BBall, when there is NO TALENT ? I don't - & college Ball will be taking a MAJOR pounding- & it will be like D II or III, where only alum & currents students watch

May 26, 2008  10:03 AM ET

jgb, then we should just throw in the towel and stop even TRYING to do it the right way. Let's just pay everyone and get it over with. This "entitlement" mentality is wrong and it's going to kill college sports.

May 26, 2008  11:03 AM ET

but why is the current way the 'right way' ?

I am not just trying to argue with you- although it has been a good debate-

It was like this in the pro's before the unions-
the OWNERS made a vast majority of the $ & the players made a SMALL percentage

I am not necessarily for changing the way scholarships are given now-
but if a kid wants to, say, sign a shoe deal while IN COLLEGE, why is that wrong?
he still has to play the game.....
will it make him lazier? maybe- but he should be at least given the opportunity to earn $ What if the kid blowsout a knee during his 1st year of school?
At least he would have some $ to fall back on

Ultimatly- I get your point about 'true amaturism'.... and it is noble
But times have changed. The opportunity to earn $ is there for the kids- from endorsements, crooked agents, appearance fees.
I just feel that they should be given the right to earn a living in their short window of potential

May 26, 2008  12:05 PM ET

... Forget the debate on entitlement, compensation and the "gets or don't get's" of college atheletes. Simply ALLOW THESE KIDS TO WORK!.. If a
kid on any non-athletic scholarship has the right to get a job, give that same
right to any athlete! (as long as the student actually shows up in person to
earn his pay, unlike the folks in Oklahoma)

May 26, 2008  12:52 PM ET

I agree husker-
but that should include shoe deals & any other endorsements.
which is where 'real' money is,

May 26, 2008  08:00 PM ET

They're in COLLEGE, they're not SUPPOSED to get PAID!!! Aaaaaaaaargh!!!

May 26, 2008  09:35 PM ET

None of them appear to be starving. Besides, how many college students actually have a wad of cash on them? Most have part time jobs or get money from someone or what they have saved.
