Why Chargers don't want Taylor

Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has passed word through friends that he wants to play for the Chargers. It won't happen. The Chargers are forbidden from talking about a player under contract, but sources familiar with the thinking of the team's decision-makers have said emphatically that the Chargers have no interest in the Dolphins defensive end and aspiring actor. The combination of his age, salary, what is seen as diminishing skills and his perceived lack of commitment to football quashed any interest by the Chargers. According to sources, the Chargers have not discussed a trade for Taylor with the Dolphins or Taylor's agent.

Dance your way out of this one, Jason.

May 25, 2008  09:18 AM ET

Jason can still go, but the whole dancing with the stars thing probably hurt him. Some teams will think that he is not committed to playing anymore. That might not be true, but perception is sometimes truer than reality.

if parcells calls you noncommitted to football, that is almost like a kiss of death. most of those players have not fared well. if he was younger there would be more intreset, but noone wants a 34ish DE who all ready is thinking about movie roles.

May 25, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Dancing with the stars was an off-season gig and, frankly, it kept him in great shape. How many commercials and TV appearances did Peyton Manning do? His he not committed to the Colts anymore? Parcells simply doesn't like Taylor put won't help him move on either. Parcells is a monster and needs to get out of football.

I know Eli would love this. The Vikings should package something for him. With Taylor on one side and Jared Allen on the other, Favre and the rest of the NFC North QBs won't have any time in the pocket.

May 25, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Favre? Oh that's right, he retired. Sorry, early morning brain-lock.

May 25, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Why he was not traded:
His age, salary, diminishing skills and lack of commitment to football.
Play for the Dolphins or retire. Not sure he can make 7/8 million as a dancer. He will have a hard time earning that money as a football player.

Not Eli Manning, Drunk Eli, a FN member whose favorite team is the Vikings.

I know Drunk Eli too. Great guy. Told him and cooper this is the year of the Viking. Still feel it in my bones. I'm predicting 12-4.

With Favre gone, 12-4 is feasible.

Yes, but is Favre really gone?

Parcells is an idiot. He needs to focus more on finding a bra for his mammaries, than talking trash about a former NFL Man of the Year who is in the news for his dancing, and not "making it rain", wife beating, drunk driving, assault, shooting someone, etc.

No one questioned Jason Taylor's commitment to football while the Dolphins have moved backwards year after year. Wes Welker and Chris Chambers may have talked about how they were upset by being traded, but I promise you...if we hooked those guys up to polygraph exams, it would show exquisite joy at being sent to teams who actually value their players and are committed to winning.

May 25, 2008  11:14 AM ET

They guy is in good shape. All he did was miss a few OTAs. Everyone needs to reconsider the whole "a football player goes downhill after age 32" concept. Sure, they do...but they can still be strong contributors if they avoid the injury bug and work hard to stay in shape. Look at Michael Strahan. The man turns 37 this year and Giants fans hope he doesn't retire, Cowboys/Philly/Washington fans hope he does. And honestly, how can everyone slamTaylor's commitment to play football after playing with the Dolphins in his entire career? Honestly, 'Fins management should be happy he just wanted to go dancing. Playing for that team for so long can be suicide inducing.

Why doesn't San Diego want Taylor? I don't think it has anything to do with his commitment or age. It probably has more to do with the fact that he's an undersized DE for a 3-4 scheme, and he'd most likely have to be converted to linebacker to fit into their system. Lets be honest, that's the real reason Parcells doesn't want him. You know he wants to set up a 3-4 eventually, and Taylor just doesn't fit that system. All the snubbing is just for show, and attacking his commitment is just a way to publicly save face after driving the team's best, most popular player out of town.

He sure better be or those Favre fans in the great beyond will come back and haunt him for the rest of his days.

Once upon a time, when the Raiders were annual SB contenders, Al Davis would make this deal in a heartbeat. How the other two Sunshine state teams aren't talking to Parcells about Taylor is amazing.
