Is NBA upset with Barkley?

Now there can be no doubt Charles is in charge, calling the shots on "Inside the NBA." No network suit in his right mind would allow a pregame cast member to hijack a show to discuss his personal problems. And if TNT sports boss David Levy and "Inside the NBA" producer Tim Kiely actually did think this self-indulgent jive was a great idea - and riveting TV - they should also congratulate themselves for presenting one of the most cringe-inducing moments seen on sports television. Wonder what David Stern was thinking while watching Barkley play victim as he charged Wynn Resorts and the Clark County district attorney with handling his situation in a "bogus" manner?

rich man owed money, rich man paid money, rich man will keep gambeling because that is what rich folk do. rich man defended him self in the court of public opnion. the story is.........?

I can imagine Charles being more effective as an elected official than a C-rate actor whose films made money only because of their special effects (Arnold).

he wants to run for govenerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr to gamble t

May 25, 2008  10:53 AM ET

I think it was better that he address it, as opposed to ignoring the "elephant in the room." What would be more upsetting was if he didn't have the money to pay it. He owed it, He paid it, and acknowledged that he had a problem. Pacman Jones owed $20,000 longer than Barkley, and we never even heard about it.

Barkey has always been a ranting fool. Get rid of the bum before he really embarrasses "TNT" and they start to lose viewers. Reggie should also be
shown the door. He is to alof and alwasys to laid back. Watch out for Grant Hill
when he retires he is the man for one of these jobs. He is so smooth on interviews and his knowledge of basketball has Barfley beat all to heck.

Barkley "Barfley" should have his own comedy show.

The guy is disturbed but let's face it, he is TNT. If it was The Jet with a gambling issue, nobody but Wynn would care

May 25, 2008  12:52 PM ET

I don't watch the NBA anymore for reasons I won't mention but I like this guy. He is logical and even though says things that are edgy, he speaks the truth, and doesn't tolerate reverse-racism. Mad respect for the man.

As for the gambling WHO THE F CARES!? It's is own money and he can does what he wants with it. Some ppl act like gambling is contributing to foriegn WMD production. Gambling pays taxes which helps cities balance their deficit.

May 25, 2008  01:18 PM ET

Charles has always been candid about his gambling, so it's really no big deal. As long as he can pay his debts, the amounts are unimportant.

May 25, 2008  01:26 PM ET

Whats bogus about way clark county handled the 2 stiffs, Barkley and Pac-man??? You sign a marker, you pay. Barkley is a big tipper but casinos do not like him tipping with their money.

May 25, 2008  01:26 PM ET

No league can be happy when someone associated with them racks up tens of thousands of dollars in gambling debts! That said, Charles has always been willing to play the race card to his advantage!

May 25, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Oh hell now they going to Make Charles play baseball ALA Jordan

May 25, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Well put OtherOne81. I used to think he was an idiot, but really admire how he tackled this and doesn't try to please the masses. He is what he is!

May 25, 2008  01:31 PM ET

Plus, he's not active NBA, so the commish has nothing to say about it!

May 25, 2008  01:59 PM ET

I'm not sure it's conceivably possible for David Stern to embarrass himself more than he already has. Under his leadership, the NBA has indeed enjoyed unprecedented success, at the cost of turning a pure sport into little more than good guys-bad guys pro wrestling. The pension situation for the pre-1965 players is still a very bad joke, with Stern embarrassing himself by his indifference. Charles Barkley at least says what's on his mind; Stern either has no mind or he does a great job concealing what he thinks about what's really important.

May 25, 2008  02:26 PM ET

The reason Barkley would be a good elected official? He says what's on his mind and isn't a puppet. Most polititcians nowadays do and say what the people putting money in their pockets want them to say, Barkley has the money, has the opinions, and good or bad, at least it would be what HE feels. That's why their are state legislatures, they can veto anything they don't like.

May 25, 2008  02:31 PM ET

I live in AZ and wish he would run for Governor. He tells it like it is, gambling, it is his money he is losing so what is the issue?

May 25, 2008  02:36 PM ET

It really doesn't matter what David Stern thinks or does not think, he's not in charge of this situation, the television people are.

From their point of view Sir Charles brings in ratings and Stern brings in nothing. Since the are the ones paying the band, they will be the ones calling the tune.

If the TV czars made it known that they can't work with Stern and are inclined to slow up the money taps until he is gone the owners will have David booked on the next slow boat to China and that will be the end of that.....
