Quinn readies for job he may not get

Brown QB coach Rip Scherer is trying to tweak the way Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn throw. Each has accepted the changes Scherer wants them to make. On top of that, Scherer has to make sure Quinn keeps his head knowing the only way he starts this year is if Anderson is injured or completely flops.

anderson has a bad season and Scherer will get the blame. if it aint broke..

Wow...the Browns could win their division with the talent they have now. Should be quite an interesting season. Somebody told me that the Browns are on national TV 5 times this season.

May 26, 2008  09:39 AM ET

I dont see why Rip wants them to theow a certain way enless he is making it so Anderson does flop.

May 26, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Yeah pw i agree, "if it aint broke"

May 26, 2008  10:15 AM ET

D Anderson did not do so well in the last few weeks and did awful in the Pro Bowl, even though it did not count

May 26, 2008  10:26 AM ET

DA cost the Browns the playoffs. His horrible games against Cincy and the Cardinals made the difference.
Looks broke to me.

Hopefully Quinn starts before its too late.

i think that the browns secondary will be their downfall this year. there isnt much depth so i see them being torn apart and giving up around 25 points a game.

Anderson is a good player but not great. he was exposed in the latter part of the season as a mediocre quarterback, and i see more of that this year. he'll get traded for a 2nd or 3rd rounder and brady will be given the reigns in his 3rd year.

May 26, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Derek Anderson has no clue how to throw the short to intermediate pass. That is what Rip is working on. He was successful last year due to passes 20 yards and up. His problem is he throws the ball 7 yards just as hard as he throws the ball 30 yards.

Anderson also benefited from having tall receivers in Edwards, Winslow and Jurevicious who saved Anderson on many occasions.

Anderson needs to improve on his touch and his accuracy.

May 26, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Derek Anderson may be a one year-wonder, but he helped bring a spark to a team that has been down and out since they came back in 1999.

May 26, 2008  11:18 AM ET

I wouldn't start Quinn, but if Anderson gets off to a rough start, it's good to have a great QB behind him.

May 26, 2008  12:03 PM ET

I love that Quinn is getting some time on the bench first. He is going to be a serious weapon whenever they need him.

May 26, 2008  12:17 PM ET

Quinn is handling this like a real man. keeping his mouth shut and waiting for his time.
[see also Drew Bledsoe when Tom Brady came in and shocked the world].
Class is not an easy thing to carry with you, but when you have it, its a weapon, not a burden.

May 26, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Brady should be happy doing nothing but making money.
Whenever he plays, he'll be the biggest flop since Ryan Leaf.
Right now he's got nearly as many endorsements as Manning, which he'll lose once everyone sees that he's a CFL-calibre QB at best

May 26, 2008  01:43 PM ET

Oh my God. Get to the bunker. IT'S THE APOCALYPSE! I agree with Larry B on something!

Quinn will be a great QB. Spaul is an idiot who is speaking out of hatred of Notre Dame, and he probably didn't see Brady tear up opponents for 2 years under Weis.

When did he become great?

May 26, 2008  02:52 PM ET

Why is anyone even talking about Quinn?

Just a wasted draft choice.

May 26, 2008  03:36 PM ET

brownie4life ..If you are going to lay the blame for loses at his door, then is it not fair to say he is also the main reason the won the games they did? Can't have it both ways. There are at least ten teams that wish they had DA as their QB. Probably more..

May 26, 2008  03:57 PM ET

Here's my point...Why did cleveland trade up to get brady quinn to watch him ride the pine over a nobody??? Who is Derek Anderson anyway? In a business perspective, Brady Quinn would A) Sell Jerseys B) Bring in fans and not to forget C) Be a pretty damn good quarterback. In high school he was one of the most sought after prospects and at ND he was a three year starter. I think Quinn would be a huge asset to the browns offense. Alot of people commenting do not look at the big picture. It's like oh I dont like brady quinn hes a loser. middle school mentality, seriously sit back and think about the possibilities. Yeah the browns have been getting better recently but they could exceed expectation with Quinn as their Quarterback.

May 26, 2008  04:15 PM ET

I used to be in the 'Quinn will be another Rex Grossman, only higher-paid' camp, but I have to say that in the few snaps that he took in real games he looked focused and relatively efficient for his first pro action.

He could still be another Grossman, but I don't think so now.

Spot on about DA, 50yearfan. I seem to recall many people rating him as a top-5 QB last year.

Must really be a slow day on T&R...a single thread for the day.
