Paterno voices support for playoff

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is lobbying again for major college football playoff, calling the reasons against it "bogus" less than three weeks after the Bowl Championship Series decided to maintain its current format for the foreseeable future. The 81-year-old coach said Thursday he doubts if a playoff system would be enacted soon, particularly after a May 5 meeting of the 11 Football Bowl Subdivision conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director ended with a decision to reject a four-team playoff and begin negotiations with the television networks with the current system in place.

It is wise not to anger the JoePa.

And in other news, when Penn State University officials asked Joe Pa about the possibility of grooming an assistant for the head coaching job, he scoffed "Why would I want to do something like that?"

Paterno also voices support for adult undergarments.

"a May 5 meeting of the 11 Football Bowl Subdivision conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director "

Why should ND have ANY say in the matter?
they are an independant in football & have their own agenda.
OF COURSE ND doesn't want change- if they get into a BCS bowl - they get all the $ & don't have to split it with their conference.

Because they have a deal with the BCS. And where in there says they don't want a change? It just says that they were present.

Big talk for a coach from the conference that killed any hope for a playoff. Seems like nothing but lip service to try to salvage some type of respect from Baby 10 supporters.

ND doesn't have a deal with the bcs-
the bcs allows for 2 extra 'wildcard' teams-
ND falls into this
They are not part of a conference, therefore should not be AT the meeting
- which means they SHOULD NOT have any voice until they join a conference

That'll shut the naysayers up, Joe - show them you're still "with it" by using some of that hip new lingo!

Later on in the article, Joe mentioned he was considering using the newfangled "forward pass" this year.

May 26, 2008  06:35 PM ET

Who really cares what JoePa has to say, he's not an athletic director! I know he's been in the game since before indoor plumbing, but it's still one man's opinion.

JGB, hate to tell ya man, but ALL schools have thier own agenda!

May 26, 2008  11:13 PM ET

JoePa is the man!

May 27, 2008  01:00 AM ET

When asked about the reasons he was against the current BCS system, Joe looked straight into the camera and bellowed "I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah!"

That was very funny

JoePA is correct in his support of a playoff; however, what is curious is that good coaches, like Bob Stopps of Oklahoma, shy away from the same support.

Stops (sic); Stoops!

JoePa is dead wrong. College football does not in any way shape or form need a playoff. It would be destructive and would do irreparable harm to the greatest off all games. A applaud the 100+ university presidents who have the game's best interest in mind including the students and alumni of all D1A institutions and the student athletes that facilitate the game.

And jgb, I don't know which rock you have been hiding under but Notre Dame has as much influence on college football as any single conference in and of itself.
