Ortiz to Selig: Don't ruin the sport

Bud Selig and David Ortiz just have to agree to disagree. Selig believes the pace of games needs to be crisper. Ortiz feels recent attempts by Major League Baseball to quicken the pace will ruin the sport. Ortiz appears to be the most passionate member of the Sox clubhouse on this issue. He held back what he really wanted to say for fear umpires might come after him. Terry Francona held a meeting with his players yesterday to go over the directives, which include limiting the number of times a hitter steps out, preventing batters from reapplying pine tar, keeping pitchers working at a brisk pace, and having relievers enter the game in an orderly fashion.

You tell him Ortiz. And everyone should stop juicing too. Smiley man with the big body. And slap that Ramirez upside his girly-head, with his what dreadlocks that make him look like some duffuss. You all boys just bringing in the change and play ball. Let Selig ruin the game on his own, he's done a great job so far.

Baseball get's any slower and it will be a two bottles of Jack per game sport. On the other hand, if Boston ever wants to dump Ortiz he is one I would definitely prefer to see in Yankees pin stripes. He would hit 50 HRS in Yankee stadium.

i like you big papi but i have to disagree. the speed of games is far too slow. unless you want to shorten the commercial breaks (and i don't see that happening) something needs to shorten. games are going on for 4 plus hours. that's just plain dumb. playoffs maybe but here we are in the regular season and games just keep dragging and dragging.

May 27, 2008  07:24 AM ET

You'd think that sitting on the bench, only emerging to for 4 AB's, would be rediculously boring. Of all people I would think DH's would want the pace of game improved.

But then again, I'm not a DH... I'm just a fan that wants to see the average 9 inning game at 2 hours.

May 27, 2008  07:36 AM ET

There is more to blame for slow games than just the game itself.

I don't think you tell players that they cannot step out of the box more than once or that they cannot re-apply pine tar. Playing the game is what they do. What if a player stepped out once, looked for a sign and didn't get it, went to re-apply pine tar to ask the on-deck player or bench what he missed? It happens! What if you have the case with all those may flies or whatever...pitchers must work even faster? This game, unlike (apparently) Bud Selig's, requires concentration for periods of time. That is how they make their living.

All that will happen is the people that complain about ticket prices will complain even more ("I PAID THAT MUCH MONEY TO WATCH AN HOUR-AND-A-HALF GAME?!?!)

May 27, 2008  07:46 AM ET

big papi just wants to sit on his **** more, i mean if the game went quicker he would have less time to rest between at bats and you dont want his heartbeat to rise too much now, do you???

May 27, 2008  07:57 AM ET

I don't buy that the game "requires concentration for periods of time". MLB baseball games are a product sold to viewers, not the other way around. And if MLB wants to keep viewers interested for 3.5 hours, then they are wring. I watch every game I can, begining to end, I'm big fan of the game and my team, but I prefer faster games.

If teams played the fundamentals flawlessly, like Japanese teams, then the game would move quicker... Think about it.

$10 says that in a day or two that he says he was misqutoed and his comments were taken out of context... Maybe the language barrier is the problem...

I mean that would explain it, right?

May 27, 2008  08:17 AM ET

sorry papi...don't agree with you at all on this one. the games need to pick up the pace a little. there is no reason for multiple 'self-adjustments' per at bat and believe me, the gloves will fit the same after the 1st pull as the 5th.

Just another example of how out of touch players are with the fans.

Football and B-ball games are slower...relax Bud

I ...SPIT Clap Clap...Think....spit clap..clap Games.....spit spit spit...clap Are....spit..spit...spit...clap clap clap clap clap...Just.....scratch..spit...clap clap FINE!!!!!!!!!

May 27, 2008  08:33 AM ET

@mcclure: just b/c other sports are slow, doesn't mean they have to be. Baseball doesn't have to be slow and it's fanbase could really benefit from a quicker game.

The owners want slower games, to sell more tv ad time and sell more stuff at the park. But when was the last time owners did something in the best interest of the fans... (Bill Veeck comes to mind.)

From the TRUTH's Common Sense File: Ways to Effectively Speed of the Game:

1) The Soprano Rule. Once the batter steps into the box, there's NO Gettin' Out!
2)Pitchers are not allowed to spit, lather, or do anything that affects their grip on the ball, same should apply to hitters. A batting glove should be enough.
3) Questec....what happened to ye? What happened to this "uniformed Strike Zone" from a few years back? Knees to shoudlers..over the plate....

Now, lets get it done!

May 27, 2008  08:37 AM ET

I'm not a real baseball fan, but I think there should be some kind of pitch clock. I don't know what the magic number would be as far as the number of seconds a pitcher would get but it could speed up the pitching, although it would probably screw up some other part of the game. Just an idea.

May 27, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I wouldn't mind the game being so long if they didn't show the same damned commercials over and over and over and over and......since I'm a big fan of senor papi I can't bring myself to argue. Ok, you gotta admit, some of these games are ridiculously long there, big man.

May 27, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Hell, If they limited Julio Lugo to only three crotch grabs per inning, we'd shave off serious time here. Selig, a little sit down with Julio is in order here.

May 27, 2008  08:57 AM ET

BUD SELIG, FOR A LIFETIME FAN, OWNER AND COMMISSIONER, JUST DOES NOT GET IT. THERE IS NO CLOCK IN BASEBALL! THE LEISURELY PACE OF A GAME IS PART OF ITS ATTRACTION. ORTIZ IS SPOT ON. THE GAME IS NOT ABOUT THE OWNERS, THE UMPIRES OR THE COMMISSIONER OF ALL BASEBALL. LET THE PLAYERS PLAY AND LET THE FANS WHO LOOK FOR A QUICKER PACE GO TO THE DOG TRACK.
