UCLA lands QB commitment

Richard Brehaut, a 6-foot-3 junior quarterback from Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos, said Monday he has committed to UCLA. He was offered a scholarship over the weekend after offensive coordinator Norm Chow evaluated him during a spring practice Wednesday. Brehaut's stock has risen this spring and he was on the radar of many schools after his performances in combines and camps. UCLA has been patiently scouting and trying to figure out who's the second-best quarterback in the Southland behind Santa Ana Mater Dei's Matt Barkley, who committed to USC.

At this point, UCLA continues to get the "second best" while USC gets the best in terms of recruitment. As a USC fan, I only hope it stays this way, but fear changes with the Norm Chow factor, as well as the possibility of a big year for the Bruins.

Recruiting is not an exact science. Who knows what this kid will do at the next level. Getting the "Second Best" talent is a whole lot better than not being able to recruit the top talent in your home state.

QB will be a need and this kid has a chance to play early at UCLA.

We all knew that Norm Chow would impact recruiting at UCLA; he is a great evaluator of talent (especially for his system) and this guy could give us issues in by 2010-2011.

May 27, 2008  09:26 AM ET

UCLA needs to win the rivalry to get the recruits, so Neuheisel and Chow need to coach their butts off the next couple of years.

The worm is turning

good for this kid to be the first tapped on the shoulder by chow. though vontaze burfict is going to be eating his lunch for four years.

May 27, 2008  12:59 PM ET

Hope the kid can run, because we still don't have an O-line

here's hoping for next year

May 27, 2008  01:16 PM ET

This is a good sign for UCLA fans. If Chow evaluates this kid to be scholarship-worthy, then he will be competitive in the PAC 10. Things are looking up for the Bruins. (Too bad Chow wasn't made coach instead of Newhassle. An "In case of NCAA sanctions..." clause would not have to have been written into his contract.)

UCLA will always be second best

Santa Ana Mater Dei, there that is a report violation

I competely agree. I think Chow got a raw deal in Tennessee. He definitely will make UCLA's offense a lot better. Still as long as Pete Carroll is head coach at USC you got to favor them. It makes this rivalry a lot more interesting.

May 27, 2008  04:25 PM ET

this guy is a class act, i guess all his family and friends were trojan fans, but he claims to have always been bleeding blue and gold. Not a bandwagoner, hope he'll make an impact soon.

UCLA wasn't second best for 8 years straight when we beat $UC in football (the longest streak of the rivalry).

UCLA is not second best when it comes to 102 NCAA team championships and beating $UC in basketball on a regular basis.

On top of all this, the University of Second Choice had a 39 year head start on us! How pathetic and mediocre $C really is.

May 27, 2008  06:07 PM ET

102 ncaa championships... 86 of which came in women's gymnastics and badminton. sweet.

so youre saying that in the next 39 years ucla will win 11 national championships in football to catch up? zero chance.

May 27, 2008  07:39 PM ET

who cares about 100 total chips...this is about football and a second tier QB. Chow is good but im sure ppl have had time to scout his schemes and unless UCLA gets a O-line fast, their problems will still be there!! NeuWeasel has his work cut out for him because the D is their strong point and a lot of ppl have a feeling that coordinator D.Walker will be looking for a more lucrative position somewhere else next year!! SC will still be the bench mark is L.A., as long as Pete coaches!!

what a great place for a young quarterback chow and neuheisal pretty good mentors. if they can get a little of that sc suitcase money they might build a good pregram

May 28, 2008  09:49 AM ET

He is not number two. Richard beat Matt at the last two major combines during the last two weeks and is now considered the top quarterback in the southland. I have seen this kid play and he might be the best in the nation. I love Pete Carrol, but watch out for UCLA.

In football, this is true. UCLA needs to learn how to flaunt rules, make payments to athletes, and condone criminal athletes. Click on this link to see the perfect blueprint:

Until then, USC will continue to win more football games, which of course is more important than fair competition, academic superiority, and overall national titles. Geez, when will UCLA ever learn?
