Soriano taking heat in Chicago

Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano had a relatively uneventful Monday afternoon at Wrigley Field, though he knows his poll numbers in Chicago seem to fluctuate on an hourly basis. In fact, a Cubs official offered protection for Soriano, instructing left-field bleacherites before Monday's game that any profane or inappropriate comments made toward Soriano would result in their immediate ejection. Soriano always seems to be in the eye of the storm, whether he's hitting seven home runs in one week, as he did from May 12-17, or losing a ninth-inning fly ball in the sun to help lose a game in Pittsburgh, as he did Sunday. That gaffe led to some harsh criticism from Cubs broadcaster Bob Brenly, who said Soriano can't be called a "superstar" because of his shaky defense and joked that if you threw a dart into the Cubs' dugout, anyone you hit could play left field better than Soriano.

I personally feel that Soriano needs to learn to take some criticism. Also, I do not understand why they are going to eject fans for inappropriate comments. I guess MLB needs to step in in EVERY city and inform the fans that any inappropriate comments made to ANY players will result in an ejection. That is nonsense.

You play this game in front of millions of fans. If you stink, those fans will let you know. That is how it has been for years. Perhaps Soriano's ego is very fragile and the Cubs want to protect it. Whatever the case, he must reap what he sows.

No... He is not a 5-tool player, simply because can't catch. He is a 4-tool player. Or just a tool. (that was unnecessary!)

Anyway, Cubs fans are generally super-smart people- but put them in Wrigley and BAM! they lose 40 IQ points. I guess my south-side mentality is showing. Sorry cub fans.

Can we just call him a candy ass and be done with it?

How can you not like Alfonso? The guy absolutely LOVES to play baseball, you can just tell. He smiles a lot and I think the guy would make an ideal teammate.

He can get better playing LF but the Cubs would do well to also think about moving him back to 2B except they already have a good one. Fonz will be fine and Cubs fans would do well to support him not boo him. Leave that to NY fans!

@ rhymeister: he was not a good defensive 2B. And he loves his millions... As would I.

May 27, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Not to mention that he is also so immature and undisciplined that he will not hit outside of the lead-off spot (even though it hurts the team) and when he is made to he won't perform... some "professional" athelete. Too bad you can't take his talent and give it to someone who would be more grateful to have it and make the most of it

May 27, 2008  09:46 AM ET

This guy needs to be a DH, but the way his horrible defense keeps costing the Cubs games, I hope they leave him in LF for a long long time.....Sunday's game was absolutely hilarious.......

I miss SORI!!!!!!!

Cub fans loved him when he was carrying their asses for a week and a half.
We love you!
We hate you!

How do you solve a problewm like alfonso?

I loved Soriano on the Yankees, right up to the point where he showed no plate discipline in the playoffs...

He is fast, a great contact hitter, for power, if he could just learn to be patient at the plate he could be so much more.

May 27, 2008  10:27 AM ET

..a great contact hitter?? He has struck out at least 121 times in every full season. Maybe that person was kidding.

May 27, 2008  10:36 AM ET

No I was serious, unfortunately he swings at stuff so far off the plate he can't hit it. If it is hitable he can make contact, he just has no plate discipline,

Maybe thats because Soriano isn't a left fielder...lay off Cubs fans, it's not like you're going to win a WS anytime soon anyway

May 27, 2008  11:00 AM ET

Are we kidding ourselves here. the guy gave up the second base position to help the team out and is relatively still new in dealing with Left Field.. He may be immature and this and that but the guy can play the game...What were his stats last year: 2007 CHC 97 runs scored, 173 hits, 42 doubles, 5 triples, 33 home runs, 70 rbi's, 19 stolen bases. Not bad stats for 135 games.. Be nice if everyone on the team hit like this.

Ok he is not a gold glove left fielder but he is going to win you more games than you lose and last year he helped carry the team on many an ocassion. I am not a crazy Soriano fan but talent is talent and if you don't like him you can always send him to NY or Boston who would both love to have him. Yanks want him back.

Relax Cubbies this year is a Cubbie and Red Sox world series so get ready for the big one. Good Luck and give the kid a break he is having a great career and will join the 500 club in 6 or 7 years. Not a bad day at work is it.
